I made up some of these Episode names.
Episode 1 - Enter The Players
"Long ago, when the pyramids were still young, Egyptian kings played a game of great and terrible power. But these Shadow Games erupted into a war that threatened to destroy the entire world until a brave and powerful pharaoh locked the magic away, imprisoning it within the mystical Millennium Items. Now, 5000 years later, a boy named Yugi unlocks the secret of the Millennium Puzzle. He is infused with ancient magical energies, for destiny has chosen him to defend the world from the return of the Shadow Games just as the brave pharaoh did 5000 years ago..."
As another day begins for the students of Domino City High School, Yugi Moto and his friend Joey Wheeler are playing a game of cards as their friend Téa watched. As their other friend Tristan arrives, Joey explains that Yugi is teaching him how to play Duel Monsters, the latest card game craze to sweep the town.
The aim of the game is to use your monsters to destroy your opponent's life points. But while Yugi is something of an expert at the game, Joey is just beginning to learn how to play. However Joey explains that Yugi has the advantage that his Grandpa owns the only Game Shop in the town. As Yugi offers to take his friends to see his grandpa's super-rare card, the mention of a rare card catches the interest of one of their classmates who seems to be looking for a particularly rare card.
At the Game Shop, Yugi persuades his grandpa to show the group his special card. As Yugi's grandpa shows the group the rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, Tristan is unable to see what is so special about it but is soon set straight on the matter. The Blue-Eyes is not only a powerful monster, but there are only four copies of the card in existence. As Joey tries to persuade Yugi's grandpa to trade the card, Yugi explains that the card also has sentimental value and because of that his grandpa would never trade it. But as the group continues to talk, the boy from school enters the shop.
Tristan explains that he is Seto Kaiba, the guy who runs the powerful Kaibacorp company that makes most of the Duel Monsters duelling equipment. Not only that, but Kaiba is also the best duellist in the world and a sure favourite to win the regional championships being held shortly in the town. As Kaiba spots the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, he realises that he has finally found what he is looking for.
As Yugi's grandpa quickly packs the card away, Kaiba offers both money and cards in exchange for it but the old man refuses to trade. As Yugi's grandpa explains that a friend gave the card to him and so he could never give it away, Kaiba leaves the shop, deciding that there is no way that the foolish man will be willing to give him the card. But later that night, Kaiba sends round a group of guards to bring Yugi's grandpa to Kaibacorp so that the two can duel each other.
As Yugi and his friends arrive at the shop the next morning, Yugi is concerned that his grandpa is missing. As the phone rings, Yugi answers it to find Kaiba on the other end of the line. Kaiba tells Yugi that his grandpa is unwell and recommends that he come to collect him. When the gang arrives at Kaibacorp, they find Yugi's grandpa weak and unwell.
As Yugi's grandpa mutters something about trying to teach Kaiba a lesson, Kaiba explains that Yugi's grandpa had been beaten by him in a duel. However the two duellists had each put their best card up as a prize and now that he has won the duel Kaiba has control of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. However rather than deciding to use it, Kaiba rips up the card to prevent it from ever being used against him. As Yugi's grandpa passes his deck to his grandson, Yugi promises to teach Kaiba respect for the Heart of the Cards.
As Yugi prepares to duel Kaiba, the Millennium Puzzle around his neck begins to glow as Yugi is transformed into an older looking version of himself. With the two ready to duel, Téa marks a special friendship sign onto the hands of the four friends and then she, Tristan and Joey head off to take Yugi's grandpa to the hospital.
Back at Kaibacorp, Yugi is amazed to discover a giant virtual duelling arena. Kaiba explains that he designed it personally to make duels more exciting. As the duel begins, Kaiba plays the Hitotsu-Me Giant onto the field and a surprised Yugi watches in amazement as a life-like hologram of the monster appears on the field. As Yugi plays the Winged Dragon, Joey arrives to cheer on his friend and is startled to see the two life-like monsters facing up against each other.
As Yugi's Dragon attacks, it destroys Kaiba's Giant and reduces his life points from 2000 to 1800. While Kaiba is unfazed by this, his younger brother, who is watching from the sidelines, is amazed to see his big brother lose the first confrontation. However as Kaiba plays Saggi the Dark Clown, he uses the Negative Energy magic card to increase the Clown's ATK points before attacking. As Yugi's Dragon is destroyed, his life points fall to 1600 putting Kaiba in the lead.
As Yugi tries to plan out a strategy, he draws a card that seems useless too him and is forced to play a monster into defence mode, where its destruction will not damage his life points. However as Kaiba taunts Yugi for being as weak as his grandpa was, Yugi's faith in his deck prevails as he draws Gaia the Fierce Knight. Playing the powerful monster, Yugi destroys Kaiba's clown, reducing his life points to 1300.
But as Kaiba begins his turn, he shocks both Yugi and Kaiba by playing the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. As the Dragon destroys Yugi's Knight and reduces his life points to 900, Kaiba explains that Yugi's grandpa is not the only duellist to have a Blue-Eyes in their deck. And to prove his point further, Kaiba plays a second Blue-Eyes onto the field.
With Yugi up against two powerful dragons, he frantically searches for a way to stop Kaiba from defeating him. Finally seeing a way out of the problem, Yugi plays the Swords of Revealing Light, paralysing Kaiba's dragons for three full turns. However as Yugi continues to doubt that he will be able to win, he senses his grandpa trying to communicate with him. As Yugi listens, his grandpa explains that he still has a way to win, but that he will need to assemble the pieces of the puzzle to do so.
Remembering a conversation he had with his grandpa one time, Yugi recalls that there is one truly unstoppable monster in the game and that is Exodia. But to summon Exodia it is necessary to draw all five pieces of the monster, a feat that no duellist has ever achieved. But as Yugi draws his next card, he realises that he already has four pieces of the puzzle in his hand.
However Kaiba is unrelenting as he summons the Judge Man and destroys the monster that Yugi had played in defence mode. Playing the Dark Magician, Yugi easily destroys Kaiba's monster, reducing his life points to 1000. But as Kaiba's next turn begins, he plays a third Blue-Eyes White Dragon and destroys Yugi's Magician, reducing his life points to 400, and, as Kaiba's turn ends, the Swords of Revealing Light fade away, freeing all three of his dragons to attack on his next turn.
As Kaiba warns Yugi that there is no way for him to win, Yugi realises that Kaiba only wanted the fourth Blue-Eyes so that it could never be used against him. As Yugi prepares to draw his final card, the deck senses his doubt that he will be able to win. But as Yugi remembers the support of his friendship, he believes in himself once more and prepares to draw his final card. As Kaiba taunts Yugi, claiming that none of his pathetic cards can defeat three Blue-Eyes, Yugi proves that his deck is far from pathetic as he draws the final part of Exodia.
Summoning the powerful monster, Yugi obliterates all three of Kaiba's dragons, reducing his life points to zero and winning the match. With Yugi victorious, he uses the power of the Millennium Puzzle to release the hatred from Kaiba's mind. However as Yugi and Joey celebrate the win, Kaiba is unable to believe that Yugi was able to summon Exodia when no other duellist had ever managed it before. Kaiba's younger brother is unable to believe it either, as he has never seen his big brother get beaten before.
Over at the hospital, Yugi's grandpa is making a full recovery from the shock of his duel with Kaiba, however elsewhere a mysterious figure seems intrigued to learn of Yugi's victory over the best duellist in the world, realising that things are beginning to go as he hoped they would.
Episode 2 - The Millenium Eye
At Domino High School, Téa and Joey are having a duel against each other, and Téa is well in the lead having used a magic card to power up her monster. As Joey loses the match, he asks Yugi to explain why he keeps losing, but as his friend looks through the deck, the problem quickly becomes apparent. Joey's deck consists of really strong monsters, but doesn't have any magic cards at all, meaning that there is little chance of him ever winning a match.
As Joey worries how to solve his problem, he begs Yugi to teach him how to play properly. Yugi explains that he isn't talented enough to teach Joey, but suggests that his grandpa might be able to help. When the two arrive at the Game Shop, Yugi's grandpa agrees to teach Joey, but warns him that the training will be hard work. Joey agrees to do whatever it takes, and so Yugi's grandpa asks him some simple questions about Duel Monsters. When Joey reveals that he doesn't know the answers to any of the questions, Yugi's grandpa realises that he is going to have his work cut out for him teaching Joey how to duel like an expert.
A few days later, Yugi, Joey, Téa and Tristan are watching the final round of the Regional Duel Monsters Championship at the Duel Dome between Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor. Joey comments that he wishes he was duelling in the tournament, but Yugi explains that he still has a lot to learn, even though he is progressing well. As Yugi's grandpa arrives to give Joey another lesson, he hands Yugi a parcel that had just been delivered.
As Yugi looks at the label, he sees that it is from Industrial Illusions, the company that makes the Duel Monsters cards. Yugi wonders why Industrial Illusions would want to send him a parcel, but Joey suggests that it may be because of his victory against Kaiba. After all, Kaiba dropped out of the Regional Championships after being defeated by Yugi. However the duel has already started, so Yugi puts the parcel to one side so that he can watch the duel.
As the match continues, Joey is certain that Rex's powerhouse line up will crush Weevil's bugs, but Yugi is not so sure, knowing that Weevil is noted for his strategy and use of magic and trap cards to help him win. As Rex plays the Two-Headed King Rex, Weevil plays a Basic Insect card. However as Rex attacks the puny bug, Weevil counters the attack with his Vortex trap card before upgrading his Insect using Armour with Laser Cannon. Attacking with his enhanced monster, Weevil destroys Rex's dinosaur, winning the match.
As a shocked Rex tries to work out how he could have lost, the creator of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus, presents Weevil with his prize and offers him a place at the Duellist Kingdom tournament that is about to begin. As Pegasus leaves the Duel Dome in his limo, one of his guards informs him that the parcel was delivered as requested.
With the match over, Yugi remembers that he hasn't opened the parcel yet. However as he unwraps it, he finds a strange glove, a couple of stars and a video cassette. As he places the tape into the machine, Pegasus appears on screen to introduce himself. He explains that he is interested in Yugi and would like to get to know him better. Therefore Pegasus proposes a 15-minute timed duel between the two duellists to try and break the ice between the two.
Yugi is puzzled by the suggestion of duelling over a tape, but as he wonders how it could be done it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary tape and that Pegasus is no ordinary person. As Pegasus moves the hair away from his left eye, he reveals a strange fake eye, which he uses to transport Yugi into a mysterious Shadow Realm.
With no choice but to accept the duel, Yugi's Millennium Puzzle activates, transforming himself into his other self. Pegasus begins the duel, playing one card face down, but as Yugi prepares to make his move, Pegasus predicts what it is and as Yugi plays the Koumori Dragon, Pegasus counters the play by playing the Dragon Capture Jar, sealing the monster inside it.
Pegasus explains that they are no longer in the normal world, but that he has transported the two of them to the Shadow Realm, where anything is possible if you believe in the magic within the cards. Pegasus explains that the duel that he and Yugi are playing is similar to the Shadow Games of Ancient Egypt. He explains that the Duel Monsters game is not actually his invention, but a recreation of the Shadow Games that once threatened to destroy the world.
As Pegasus uses the Dragon Piper to revive Yugi's Dragon on his side of the field, Yugi counters with Silver Fang but it is destroyed, reducing Yugi's life points to 1500. Pegasus taunts Yugi, commenting that he has not realised the true potential of his Millennium Item. As Yugi wonders what he means, Pegasus explains that there are in fact seven Millennium Items that the Pharaoh used in ancient times to seal away the magic of the Shadow Realm.
With time running out, Yugi prepares to make his next move, but Pegasus announces that he already knows how to counter the Zombie Warrior. As Yugi realises that Pegasus can use his Millennium Eye to see the cards in his hand, he realises that he has a better chance if he plays the cards straight from his deck without looking at them. As Pegasus sets up a counter measure to block Yugi's zombie, Yugi instead plays the top card from his deck.
Revealing the Dark Magician, Yugi destroys Pegasus's dragon, reducing his life points to 1200. Pegasus plays the Faceless Mage, he equips it with the Eye of Illusion, but as Yugi attacks it, nothing happens. However as Yugi plays the Celtic Guardian and orders it to attack, the Faceless Mage uses his own Dark Magician to block the attack. As Yugi's Magician is destroyed, his life points fall to 400, but the attack has left the Faceless Mage vulnerable.
Playing the Summoned Skull, Yugi orders it to attack the mage. But as the Skull's finishing attack prepares to destroy the mage, the time runs out and the duel ends with Pegasus still in the lead. Pegasus offers that he and Yugi can duel again sometime, but Yugi refuses to duel with him ever again. But as Pegasus uses the Millennium Eye to steal the soul of Yugi's grandpa, he explains that anybody can be made to play his game, even if they need a little persuading. And with Yugi's grandpa's soul the prize of their next duel, Yugi may not have any choice but to accept Pegasus's challenge.
Episode 3 - Journey to the Duellist Kingdom
After his intense duel with Pegasus, Yugi is wondering what Pegasus could possibly want with him. However as he considers his dilemma, Joey has received a video tape of his own, and once again the tape's contents isn't good news. The tape is a recording made by Joey's sister Serenity who he hasn't seen since their parents separated six years ago. On the tape, Serenity asks her big brother not to forget her even though she doesn't have much time left...
At the Game Shop, a letter has arrived for Yugi with an invitation to the Duellist Kingdom Tournament. With only two days until the boat is going to leave, Yugi's friends try to convince him that it isn't safe to go alone, but they can't go with him as they don't have invitations. However as Joey realises that there is a $3million he becomes very excited and decides that he is going to get onto the boat to help Yugi rescue his grandpa.
As Yugi and Joey discuss how the two of them became friends, Yugi recounts the story of how he came to own the Millennium Puzzle (Yu-Gi-Oh! Episode 01). His grandpa had the Puzzle in pieces from some ruins in Ancient Egypt and had spent years trying to assemble it without success. However one day, when Yugi was new to the school, he wished that he could make some friends.
Soon after that Yugi met up with Joey and Tristan, but the two seemed to spend more time picking on him that being his friend. At this point Joey interrupts, explaining that they weren't picking on him, they were toughening him up so that he could stand up to other bullies. It was as the three began to get to know each other that Yugi successfully assembled all the pieces of the Puzzle.
Two days later, as Yugi prepares to board the ship that will take him to the Duellist Kingdom, a guard announces that nobody is allowed onto the boat unless they can show them a star chip. As Yugi waits in line, the guards catch Joey because he doesn't have any star chips. While the guards and Joey argue, Téa and Tristan sneak on board hidden inside a crate. Yugi overhears the argument between Joey and the guards and, to stop his friend being kicked off the boat, gives Joey one of his star chips. As both duellists are allowed on board, one of the guards warns Yugi that he will be at a disadvantage if he only has one star chip instead of two.
On the ship, Yugi tells Joey to keep quiet about them only having one chip each, but one of the other duellists, Mai Valentine, overhears them talking. However while Mai is surprised to see that Yugi is the kid who managed to beat Kaiba in a duel, Joey seems more interested in drooling over Mai. Elsewhere on the ship, Téa and Tristan climb out of the crate and spot Yugi, Joey and Mai talking.
As Yugi and Joey continue to explore the ship, they meet up with Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood, the two finalists of the Regional Championships. As the two friends talk with Weevil, he explains that he is looking forward to facing Yugi in a duel, but warns Yugi that if he is going to be successful in the tournament he will have to learn the new rules that will be in place on the island. As Yugi and Weevil continue to talk, Weevil sneers at all the duellists who are trading cards, explaining that trading only lets other people know of the cards in your deck.
Elsewhere on the ship, Mai is disgusted by the quality of her room as Rex Raptor walks by. As the runner-up in the Regional Championships mocks her, explaining that he has a much better room, Mai challenges him to a duel to decide who gets the room. Rex is unsure, but when Mai offers to kiss him if he wins he quickly accepts the offer. As the two duellists head off to start their contest, Téa and Tristan see one of their classmates, Bakura, looking out over the ocean. The two are both confused as to why Bakura is on the ship, but decide not to risk confronting him as they are both stowaways.
Back on the main deck, Yugi is impressed with the cards Joey has gotten in trades and offers him the Time Wizard card as it will go well with Joey's other monsters. However as the two friends seem to be getting on well, Mai and Rex are just beginning their duel. As the two set up to duel in Rex's room, Mai suggests that they each play with their opponent's deck. However as Rex draws a starting hand from Mai's deck, she successfully predicts each of the cards, informing Rex that she has a psychic link with her deck.
On the main deck, Yugi and Joey have met up with Weevil again, who asks Yugi if he could take a look at his Exodia cards. However as Yugi hands him the cards, Weevil explains that he has just found a way to defeat Exodia and proceeds to throw the cards overboard into the sea. Joey dives in to try and rescue the cards, but the waves are strong and he quickly gets swept under. As Yugi jumps in to save his friend, Taya and Tristan, who have been watching their friends, throw a ladder down to them so that they can climb back up onto the ship.
As Mai throws Rex out of her newly claimed room, Joey apologises to Yugi for only managing to rescue two of the five pieces of Exodia. As the four friends talk, Joey explains that his sister Serenity is ill and that if she doesn't receive medical help soon then she will go blind. He tells them that there is a specialist who could save her sight, but the operation is going to be expensive and so that's why he wants to duel in the tournament.
As the boat approaches the island, both duellists agree to do their very best to try and help the ones they love. But with so many great duellists competing in the tournament, it's not going to be a walk in the park for either of the two friends.
Episode 4 - Into the Hornet's Nest
As the boat arrives at the Duellist Kingdom, all the duellists seem amazed by the huge size of the island. But as the duellists are amazed by the glory of the island, Tristan is concerned that he and Téa may be stopped as they get off the boat and be found out as stowaways. Fortunately, as the four friends get off of the boat, none of them are stopped to check their star chips.
As the four head off for Pegasus's castle, where all the duellists are supposed to meet, Yugi notices that Joey has caught a cold from trying to rescue the pieces of Exodia. Joey vows that he is going to get Weevil back for what he did, but, as he is talking, Taya spots Bakura hiding in the woods. Having seen him twice now, Téa is sure that she isn't seeing things, but no one in the group can understand why he always seems to be hiding from everybody.
As the duellists gather at Pegasus's castle, the general topic of conversation is Kaiba and the fact that he has dropped out of the tournament after being defeated by Yugi in a duel. However Yugi is more concerned about duelling Pegasus for the chance to rescue his Grandpa. At this point, Pegasus steps out onto the balcony of his castle to greet the competitors. He explains that the tournament will test their skills in new ways but that eventually one duellist will be crowned the King of Games.
Pegasus explains that each duellist has been given a duelling glove and two star chips, and that the aim of the tournament is to wager star chips on duels in order to win ten star chips. Once a duellist has ten star chips, they will be eligible to enter Pegasus's castle and duel him for the title of King of Games. However Pegasus warns the duellists that the arenas on the island have intriguing new rules that will have to be learnt and mastered in order to win. As the duellists begin to prepare their decks before the duelling starts in one hour's time, Pegasus is pleased to see that Yugi has taken the bait and come to the island.
Concerned that he isn't a good enough duellist to earn ten star chips, Joey decides to give Yugi back the star chip that he gave him, but Yugi insists that he keep it as he needs the prize money for his sister's operation. As fireworks light up the sky, signalling the start of the tournament, Yugi decides that he might as well begin by duelling Weevil. However as the group finds Weevil in the forest, he runs away from them, deep into the forest.
As Yugi follows his opponent, he wonders why Weevil seems so eager to run away when he knows that Weevil wants to duel him. However as the group catches up with Weevil, he taunts Yugi, explaining that he has fallen into the trap that Weevil had laid for him. But as Yugi vows to make Weevil pay for what he did on the boat, the ground beneath them begins to shake as the duelling arena rises from under ground.
As the two players prepare themselves for the duel, Weevil is confident about the match as he knows that he only has to risk one of his two star chips against Yugi's only chip. However when Yugi proposes an all-or-nothing duel, with Yugi's deck as a prize as a substitute for a second star chip, Weevil is perfectly happy to accept. As the two duellists prepare to duel, other duellists arrive to watch, amazed that they are getting to see Weevil and Yugi duel before the finals.
For his first move, Weevil plays the Killer Needle, but Yugi counters with the Mammoth Graveyard. But as Yugi's Mammoth attacks, what should have been a stalemate causes his monster to be destroyed. As Yugi wonders what could have happened, Weevil relishes in explaining that each arena is split into field types that match its surroundings and that in this case, the arena is part wasteland and part forest.
The different arena types give certain monster types a Field Power Bonus, causing their ATK and DEF to increase, and seeing as how Weevil's bug gets an FPB from the forest, it was stronger than Yugi's Mammoth. However as Weevil continues to gloat, Yugi comments that his Mammoth also receives an FPB from the wasteland, meaning that the attack was still a stalemate and that Weevil's Killer Needle will also be destroyed.
Amazed to learn that Yugi has managed to use the field power bonus to his advantage as well, Weevil warns Yugi that there are other surprise rules that he doesn't know about yet. As Weevil plays the Hercules Beetle, Yugi counters with the Feral Imp, powered up with the Horn of the Unicorn. But as his Imp attacks, the attack is deflected by the Beetle, which then destroys Yugi's monster, reducing his life points to 1350.
Weevil explains that any monster with an FPB has a resistance against magically enhanced attacks. As Yugi plays a monster face down, Weevil brings out his Basic Insect, powering it up with a Level 3 Laser Cannon and a Level 2 Power Boost. Weevil destroys Yugi's monster, but Yugi simply plays another, once again in defence mode.
Confident that he has Yugi on the run, Weevil decides to play a trap card, which will activate as soon as Yugi next attacks. But as he begins to gloat, believing that the match is certain to be his, Yugi decides to set up a trap of his own. As Weevil continues to play more bugs onto the field, Yugi is able to set up the cards needed for his trap without Weevil even noticing. As Weevil announces that he is playing his last insect onto the field, Yugi realises that the time has come to spring his trap.
Playing the Dark Magician in defence mode, Yugi successfully lures Weevil into attacking his favourite monster. But as Weevil's Basic Insect attacks, Yugi reveals his Mirror Force trap card, reflecting the attack back at Weevil and destroying all of his monsters, reducing his life points to 555. However as Yugi is confident that Weevil has no more monsters to play, Weevil reveals that he was in fact lying on that point. As he reveals that he still has one monster available to play, he warns Yugi that there is no way he will be able to stand against it.
Episode 5 - The Ultimate Great Moth
As the duel between Yugi and Weevil continues, Mai has arrived to watch the rest of the match, hoping to see Weevil pull off a comeback in spectacular style. However as she argues with Téa over who is going to win, Yugi seems unimpressed by Weevil's bragging.
As Weevil plays a monster face down in defence mode, Yugi remembers that he still has a trap card in play and sees that Weevil is trying to lure Yugi into activating it. However Yugi is not so foolish and, playing Monster Recovery, returns all the monsters on his side of the field before playing Kuriboh in attack mode. Attacking Weevil's monster, Yugi activates the trap, destroying his Kuriboh and reducing his life points to 1050, but saving his other monsters from being destroyed in the process.
However as Weevil reveals his monster to be the Larvae Moth, he seals it inside a Cocoon of Evolution. Trapped inside the cocoon, the Moth will begin to evolve over the next five turns until it becomes the Ultimate Great Moth. Weevil challenges Yugi to try and destroy the cocoon, but with the added strength of the field power bonus the cocoon seems indestructible.
Playing Gaia, the Fierce Knight, onto the field Yugi attacks the cocoon, but the attack is deflected, reducing his life points to 750. His friends begin to cheer him on from the sidelines, but Mai tells them not to waste their breath, as Weevil is famous for using the Cocoon of Evolution and nobody has ever managed to destroy it. With four turns to go until the Moth is fully evolved, Yugi plays the Beaver Warrior in defence mode.
As Joey cheers on from the sidelines, he tells Yugi to get fired up and, although only a figure of speech, the suggestion gives Yugi an idea. Playing the Curse of Dragon, he equips it with the Burning Land magic card before attacking the forest arena around the cocoon. With the forest burnt down, the cocoon loses its field power bonus, making it weak enough to destroy.
Attacking the cocoon with Gaia, Yugi cracks it open, preventing the Moth from evolving fully. However the Moth has still reached the fourth stage of the evolution, making it stronger than it had been before entering the cocoon. And as it takes flight, Yugi realises that the only monster that he can use to attack it is his Curse of Dragon. As the moth destroys Yugi's Beaver Warrior, Yugi uses the Polymerisation card to fuse together Gaia and the Curse of Dragon to produce Gaia, the Dragon Champion.
However as his Dragon Champion prepares to attack, Yugi realises that its DEF is getting lower because of the poison spores released by Weevil's moth when it attacked. Playing Makiou, the Magical Mist, Yugi washes the spores away, but the damage has already been done. As Weevil's attack destroys the Dragon Champion, Yugi's life points fall to 50.
Back on the sidelines, Mai and Téa are still arguing, but as Mai insists that there is no way for Yugi to win, Téa asks her why Yugi is grinning. Yugi answers their question by warning Weevil that cheaters never win and, playing the Summoned Skull, he proves his point. Although Yugi's Skull is weaker than Weevil's Moth, the field is still wet from the magical mist. The Summoned Skull has an electrical attack, meaning that it will be more powerful as the water will conduct it. As Weevil and Mai watch on amazed, Yugi destroys Weevil's moth, reducing his life points to 0.
As an impressed Mai looks on, Yugi tells Weevil that he is nothing more than a cheat and that he doesn't deserve his title of Regional Champion. As Yugi takes Weevil's star chips, Joey claims the duelling glove for his own. But with both duellists still in need of many more star chips, the road to Pegasus's castle looks set to be a long one.
Episode 6 - First Duel
With the first round of duels beginning to finish, a number of duellists have already been eliminated from the competition. As Joey searches for somebody to duel, Yugi warns him that it would be better to try and find a weaker duellist to begin with, but Joey is too eager to listen to him, determined to win so that he can help his sister.
With arenas all over the place, Joey is unsure which is the best one to duel on to give himself a field power bonus. Looking through his deck, he realises that most of his monsters are strongest in a meadow environment, so he decides to look for a meadow arena. As the group searches for a suitable arena, they find Mai, who has just defeated her latest opponent. However her opponent warns the group that Mai has psychic powers that allow her to see her cards even when they are face down.
As Mai sees Yugi and the others arrive, she is eager to show off the fact that she already has four star chips, one more than Yugi does. Remembering that Joey only has one chip, Mai challenges him to duel her, explaining that she is determined to eliminate the weak players as soon as possible and that Joey is obviously the weakest player of all as he didn't even qualify for the tournament.
As his friends try to warn him against duelling a tough opponent like Mai, Joey tells them that he has to do it to prove to himself that he is good enough to be duelling to save his sister. As the two prepare to duel, with each duellist risking one star chip, Mai explains that the duelling field is 40% forest, 40% mountains and only 20% meadow, meaning that Joey's field power bonus won't be very high.
With the two duellists ready to duel, Joey asks Mai why she duels, and she tells him that she likes duelling because of all the fancy hotels and cars and the money that she gets from it. Joey explains that he thought as much, and warns Mai that he is a stronger duellist, because he duels from the heart for the ones he loves.
As the duel begins, Joey plays Masaki the Legendary Swordsman and is pleased to see his monster gain a field power bonus. But as Mai plays the Harpy Lady from a face down hand, Joey fears that maybe Mai is a psychic after all. As Mai's Harpy also gains an FPB, it also gains an advantage as it is able to fly. Attacking Joey's Swordsman, the Harpy destroys it, reducing Joey's life points to 1410.
As Mai plays a card face down, Joey plays the Tiger Axe, but Mai's Harpy destroys it, reducing his life points to 1020. As Mai plays yet another card onto the field without having looked at it, Joey begins to worry that Mai may also be able to see his cards as well as her own. Playing a monster face down in defence mode, he can only watch as Mai reveals the Cyber Shield card that she played on the previous turn, increasing her Harpy's DEF.
As Joey prepares to draw his next card, Mai claims to know what it is going to be, freaking Joey out and leaving him unfocused. As Yugi and the others try to calm Joey down, Mai explains that friends can't help out when it comes to duelling, because eventually those friends will end up having to duel each other. However as Yugi's Millennium Puzzle activates, causing him to transform into his other self, he warns Joey that Mai is trying to divide and conquer, separating him from his friends so that he will be easier to defeat.
As Joey begins to calm down and starts to focus once more, he begins to notice a number of different aromas in the air. Realising that Mai has marked each of her cards with a different scent, Joey is able to focus more clearly as he no longer has to worry about her psychic tricks. He congratulates Mai on the trick, but warns her that it won't work on him any longer and, playing the Baby Dragon in defence mode, finishes his turn.
However as Mai's turn begins, she uses Elegant Egotist to transform her one Harpy into a trio of Harpy Lady Sisters. As Joey panics as to how he can defeat three Harpies when he couldn't get rid of just one, Yugi calls out to him that Mai has only ever used one monster, and kept on powering it up. Realising that Mai probably doesn't have any other monsters in her deck, Joey's hope begins to build again.
Yugi tells Joey that he can win the duel, but he will need the card that Yugi gave him on the boat. Remembering the Time Wizard that Yugi gave him, Joey checks through his hand only to learn that it isn't there. However he puts his faith in the cards and, as he draws his next card, his faith rewards him with the Time Wizard. Playing the monster onto the field, Joey activates its Time Magic to cause time on the field to advance by one thousand years.
As time comes to a halt once more, Joey's Baby Dragon has evolved into the powerful Thousand Dragon, while Mai's three Harpies have become weakened old crones. Attacking the Harpies, Joey destroys all three of them in a single attack, reducing Mai's life points to zero. As Mai wonders how she could have lost, Joey warns her that nobody can really be strong if they isolate themselves from everybody else. And as she heads off to find another duellist to fight against, Joey is congratulated by his friends who are all proud of him, promising that they will stick together no matter what happens to them on their journey.
Episode 7 - Attack From the Deep
Having won his first star chip, Joey is feeling quite proud of himself as he and Yugi search for another duellist to challenge. But as the group continues their search of the island, Tristan begins to feel hungry and the group realises that none of them have brought along any food. As the group begins to search for food, Joey picks up the scent of fish cooking.
The others are doubtful that what he is smelling is actually food, but he reminds them that his nose has already gotten himself out of trouble once since they reached the island. Following the scent to the coast line, the group finds a number of fish cooking over a small fire, but as Tristan and Joey prepare to tuck in, Téa tells them not to as the food isn't their's to take.
As the group argues over whether or not to eat the food, one of the duellists arrives and orders them to leave his food alone. Yugi recognises the duellist as Mako Tsunami, the duellist who was ranked third in the Regional Championships. Yugi apologises for Joey and Tristan's behaviour, but when Mako realises who Yugi is, he is willing to share the food with the only person to have ever defeated Seto Kaiba in a duel.
As the group sits down to eat, Mako explains that he has a special bond with the sea and hopes to win the tournament in order to buy himself a boat. With the meal finished, Yugi and the others prepare to head off once more, but Mako prevents them from leaving, explaining that they can't leave until he and Yugi duel. He explains that he has been using the fish to lure duellists to the sea where he challenges them to duel.
As an arena rises up from under the water, Mako informs Yugi that the arena is 50% land and 50% water and the two agree to each risk two star chips on the outcome of the duel. On his first turn, Mako plays the Denizens of the Deep, but with the monster being played underwater, Yugi is unable to see it to attack it. As Yugi plays the Horn Imp, Mako warns him that in a water duel, the underwater monsters have the added protection of the sea as well as a field power bonus to help them.
Playing the Fiend Kracken, Mako attacks Yugi's Imp, destroying it and reducing his life poionts to 1740. As Yugi plays the Feral Imp, a monster with an electrical attack, Mako increases his underwater arsenal by playing the Giant Jellyfish. Powering up his Imp with the Horn of the Unicorn, Yugi uses the Imp's electrical attack in an attempt to fry Mako's monsters.
However Mako reveals that his Jellyfish has the ability to absorb all electrical attacks, preventing them from harming his other monsters. Attacking Yugi's Feral Imp with the Fiend Kracken, Mako reduces Yugi's life points to 1480. As Yugi plays Silver Fang, powering it up with the Full Moon, Mako is pleased with the result, which causes the tide to come in, flooding more of the field.
Playing his Kuriosheen, Mako creates a tidal wave which destroys Yugi's Silver Fang and reduces the amount of land on the field to nothing more than a small island. He tells Yugi that he is lucky to be left with such a large amount of land, as the tidal wave usually destroys all the land on the field.
As Yugi searches for a way out of his predicament, Mako warns him that there is no way for him to win because Mako has the strength of fighting for a loved one. Many years ago, Mako and his father became trapped in a storm and although Mako survived, his father went missing. However one of the lifeboats also disappeared, leaving Mako to believe that his father is still alive and that is why he must win, to buy a boat and find his father.
Although touched by the story, Yugi warns Mako that he also duels for his loved ones and that Mako should not be so sure of his victory. As Yugi plays the Giant Soldier of Stone, Mako is amused that it can hardly fit onto the remaining land. Playing the Great White Terror, the monster leads Mako's arsenal on an assault on Yugi's Soldier.
But as Mako's forces close in, Yugi orders his Soldier to attack the Full Moon which he played onto the field. With the Moon destroyed, the tide recedes until there is no water left on the field, leaving Mako's monsters vulnerable to an attack. As Yugi plays the Curse of Dragon, powered up with the Burning Land card, he attacks Mako's monsters, destorying them all in one go and wiping out all of Mako's life points.
Although disappointed that he has lost, Mako is prepared to start over again and congratulates Yugi on the ingenious move, wishing him all the best on the journey ahead.
Episode 8 - Little Kid, Mokuba Kaiba
Somewhere in Pegasus's castle, a young boy is trying to escape out of a window using his sheets as a rope. As the boy reaches the ground and runs away, a guard walks intot he room only to realises that the prisoner has escaped. Elesewhere in the castle, Pegasus is reading a comic book when the guard arrives to inform his boss of the prisoner's escape, but Pegasus isn't bothered as he knows that the boy is looking for Yugi.
It has been six hours since the duels began, and 12 duellists have already been eliminated. Pegasus is pleased to learn that Yugi Moto already has five star chips and is beginning to look forward to facing Yugi in a duel. Setting his sights on the young protege, he decides orders the guard to track him until he is confronted by the prisoner.
Out on the island, Yugi and the others spot one of Pegasus's guards, Kemo, grabbing one of the duellists. The duellist has no star chips and so Kemo is preparing to ship him off the island, but the kid claims that his chips were stolen . Although Kemo doesn't care how he lost his chips, Yugi and the others are intrigued and offer to try and get the chips back for him.
Learning that the thief was a little guy wearing a bandana, the gang heads off to try and find him, but the boat will be leaving in half an hour so they won't have long to find him and get the chips back to their rightful owner. As the group return to the scene of the crime in the hopes that the thief is still hanging about there, the kid jumps out from the bushes to challenge Yugi to a duel.
Each duellist agrees to put all five of their star chips up for offer, and while Yugi claims to know why the thief wants to duel him, the thief warns him that he will make him pay for what he did to his brother. As the two prepare to duel, the thief begins to remember what happened to him a few days before:
"In the offices of Kaibacorp, Kaiba informs his younger brother, Mokuba, that he isn't going to duel any more because he lost a part of himself when he duelled against Yugi. As Mokuba can only stand and watch as his brother walks out of his life, he is determined that Yugi will pay for driving his brother away from him"
For his first move, Mokuba plays the Man Eating Plant, but Yugi counters with the Winged Dragon, destroying the Plant and reducing Mokuba's life points to 1400. Yugi tries to warn Mokuba that he won't be able to win with stolen cards as he isn't connected to the heart of them, but Mokuba claims that the cards are just about power and that it doesn't matter whose they are.
As his opponent finally realises who he is, Mokuba takes off the mask as he tells Yugi that it is his fault that his brother went away and that Pegasus is trying to take over Kaibacorp:
"Not long after Kaiba left, Pegasus got in contact with the main bosses ("The Big Five") to offer a merger between the two companies. The two parties agreed that Kaiba would need to be taken out, but as Kaibacorp must legally be run by a member of Kaiba's family, they would take Mokuba captive and run the company on his behalf. The Big Five also demanded that Yugi must be destroyed to restore the good name of Kaibacorp. Although Mokuba was eavesdropping on the conversation, Kemo was watching him and grabbed him before he could get away."
As the duel continues, Mokuba plays Crocadilus, but Yugi destroys it, reducing his life points to 1100. He tries to explain to Mokuba that he wants to stop Pegasus as well, and suggests that they should work together, not against each other. However Mokuba refuses, explaining that he has to defeat Yugi himself in order to save Kaibacorp. Although the logic seems confusing to his friends, Yugi explains that if Pegasus never gets a chance to defeat him, then he will never get to take control of Kaibacorp.
However as Yugi and his friends are talking, they have failed to notice that Mokuba has left the duelling arena. Before Yugi is able to react, Mokuba grabs Yugi's star chips and runs away, but the group stops him before he can get away. Yugi explains that Kaiba is confused and looking for answers, but promises that he will come back when he has found them. As Mokuba agrees to work with Yugi against Pegasus, the group rushes off to the boat with only three minutes left.
At an unknown location, Kaiba has been running simulation after simulation of his duel against Yugi, trying to work out how he could have lost. Unable to find an explanation for how Yugi could have managed to draw Exodia in time to win the duel, Kaiba begins to suspect that perhaps Yugi is right when he claims that the cards are about heart not power.
Determined to duel Yugi again, Kaiba has prepared a new portable duelling system that will allow him to challenge Yugi wherever he may find him. However as Kaiba makes preparations to head off, two of Pegasus's guards break into the room. Grabbing the case with the duelling system in it, Kaiba jumps out of the window and as the guards look out there is nothing to be seen but the cliff face and the sea below.
Satisfied that they have completed their mission successfully, one of the guards remembers that Pegasus ordered them to bring back Kaiba's Blue-Eyes deck. Finding the deck, the two take it and leave.
Back at the dock, Yugi and the others arrive only to learn that the boat has left early. As Mokuba holds out the chips to try and get Kemo to call back the boat, Kemo knocks the chips into the water. As the gang realises that some of Yugi's chips were in the pile as well, Kemo grabs Mokuba again. Determined to keep his new friend away from Pegasus, Yugi challenges Kemo to a duel, risking his three remaining star chips to rescue Mokuba.
As Yugi arrives at the arena where he and Kemo will duel, Kemo informs him that it isn't him that will be duelling Yugi. He explains that although Yugi's competitor had an unfortunate accident earlier today he has come back for one last duel. As the group look up to the duelling arena to see who his opponent will be, they see that it is none other than Kaiba himself. But with Yugi having lost Exodia, will he stand a ghost of a chance against his old rival?
Episode 9 - Duel With a Ghoul
As Yugi and his friends try to take in the fact that Yugi's opponent is Kaiba, Kemo tells them that he has no chance against a ghost and his memories. The ghost of Kaiba tells Yugi that it is his fault that he has gone, and that when he defeated him in the duel against Exodia he not only took away his title but also stole his life and destroyed his soul.
However Yugi is not convinced that his opponent is the real Kaiba and orders him to begin the duel, knowing to himself that there is no way to imitata Kaiba's Blue-Eyes deck. As each duellist stakes three star chips on the outcome of the duel, Kaiba uses his thoughts to taunt Yugi, telling him that he has no chance of winning the duel.
As Yugi's opponent makes his first move, he plays the Hitotsu-Me Giant, the same opening move that Seto Kaiba played when he and Yugi first duelled. However Yugi plays the Dark Magician and easily destroys the Giant, reducing Kaiba's life points to 700 after just one turn. As Yugi seems confident that he can defeat the impostor, his opponent warns him that he may as well give up now as without Exodia Yugi has no way of winning.
As the banter between Yugi and Kaiba continues, the real Kaiba is very much alive and is preparing to break back into his house, sneaking past Pegasus's guards. A musical interlude plays as Kaiba remembers how he escaped from Pegasus's guards, grabbing onto a ledge hanging out from the cliff after he jumped out of the window.
Now that he has made it back into the compound, Kaiba makes his way to his secret lab where he prepares to put a stop to Pegasus's schemes. However Kaiba's confidence in Yugi begins to fade as he learns that Yugi no longer has Exodia and he begins to hack into Pegasus's mainframe to see how Yugi is doing.
As the real Kaiba trties to infiltrate Pegasus's computer system, the fake Kaiba shocks the group with his next card, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. As Yugi and his friends realise that this must be Kaiba's deck, Yugi is still not convinced that it is Seto Kaiba who is using it.
At his secret lab, the real Kaiba has hacked into the Duellist Kingdom mainframe without much difficulty, but as he tries to search for Yugi's data he hits the main security system of the mainframe. Realising that there is no way to hack into the data, Kaiba decides to use a different approach. Hacking into the satellite that transmits data from the island to the main computer on the network, Kaiba reprogrammes the satellite and froces it to crash into the building that houses the main computer. With the network shut down Kaiba is able to hack into the mainframe and begin a search for the Dark Magician.
As the fake Kaiba's turn continues, he plays a card face down and then ends his turn, taunting Yugi by not attacking with his Blue-Eyes. Not wanting to lose any life points when his opponent attacks, Yugi switches his Magician to defence mode and then plays the Curse of Dragon in defence mode as well. However as he does so, Kaiba reveals his Stop Defence card, a card which forces both of Yugi's monsters into attack mode. Attacking with his Blue-Eyes, Kaiba destroys Yugi's Curse of Dragon, reducing his life points to 1000.
Back at the lab, Kaiba has searched all but one of the active duelling fields without success and is now certain that Yugi must be duelling on field 146. However as he attempts to access the field data the system freezes as he hits another security feature. Determined to get through, Kaiba uses a program to blast through the defences, but finds himself up against a password-protected fortress protecting Yugi's data. Confident that Pegasus will have used an easy to guess password, Kaiba tries "Pegasus" and successfully gains access to Yugi's duelling data, but will he believe what he finds?
As the duel continues, Mokuba tells Yugi that he is certain that his opponent isn't his brother and that his brother would never be mean like this guy is. Yugi, who has also come to the same conclusion, plays the Magical Hats, hiding his Dark Magician under one of four hats. Kaiba mocks the pathetic trick, but Yugi tells him that it is more than a trick and that he only has a 25% chance of attacking the Dark Magician. However the bigger problem for his opponent is the question of what is under the other hats.
Unfazed by Yugi's trickery, Kaiba seems confident that he knows where the Dark Magician is hiding and orders his Blue-Eyes to attack. Yugi is hopeful that Kaiba has guessed wrong, but if he is right then he will have lost everything he was fighting for.
Episode 10 - Give Up the Ghost
As the Blue-Eyes' attack destroys one of Yugi's Magical Hats, both he and his friends are relieved to see that the chosen Hat was empty. With Mokuba cheering Yugi on from the sidelines, Yugi pays a trap card under one of the remaining hats, warning the impostor Kaiba that there is now a 1 in 3 chance that he will activate the trap rather than get his Magician.
As Kaiba orders the Blue-Eyes to attack, the attack activates Yugi's Spell Binding Circle, trapping the dragon and reducing its ATK. Seeing the opportunity to attack, Yugi destroy's the Blue-Eyes, reducing Kaiba's life points to 500. However as his turn begins, Kaiba plays the second Blue-Eyes, destroying Yugi's Magician and reducing his life points to 500.
In an attempt to convince Yugi that he really is Kaiba, the duellist tells Yugi the events that happened last time the two met in a duel. However Mokuba calls to Yugi, telling him that everyone knows about Yugi's duel with his brother, insisting that his opponent is a fake.
Elesewhere, the real Kaiba has managed to gain access to the data for the duel that Yugi is playing, and is shocked to learn that Yugi's opponent is listed as Seto Kaiba. As the computer informs him that Yugi's opponent is using Kaiba's deck, he realises that there is no way that Yugi will be able to defeat all three of the Blue-Eyes and, in an attempt to help Yugi out, begins to upload a virus into the second Blue-Eyes.
As Yugi plays the Feral Imp, the fake Kaiba prepares to attack with the second Blue-Eyes as the virus begins to take effect, reducing the ATK of the dragon. Watching the duel from the castle, Pegasus realises that Kaiba must still be alive and begins to shut Kaiba out of the computer system. As Kaiba prepares to begin infecting the third Blue-Eyes, Pegasus blocks his access to the system, sending in a team of guards to capture Kaiba.
As Kaiba calls out in an attempt to warn Yugi, Yugi is not the only one to sense his cry for help. The Blue-Eyes that the fake Kaiba had played suddenly vanishes, having sensed the call of its real owner. Yugi explains that the real Kaiba destroyed the Blue-Eyes and then forces the impostor to reveal who he is. The impostor explains that he is the dark part of kaiba that Yugi banished to the Shadow Realm after he and Kaiba duelled.
Back at Kaiba's mansion, Pegasus's guards break into Kaiba's room only to find him gone. As they contact Pegasus with the bad news, he in turn contacts Kemo, informing him that he must not lose control of Mokuba, no matter how the duel ends. As Kaiba plays Grappler in defence mode, Yugi plays one card face down before playing the Celtic Guardian, destroying Kaiba's monster.
Kaiba plays the Mystic Hrseman in defence mode and one other card face down, and Yugi retaliates by playing the Mystical Elf and Book of Scret Arts, plus one card face down. As Kaiba plays his final Blue-Eyes, he attacks Yugi's monster, but the attack is reflected back at the dragon by Yugi's Mirror Force. However as Yugi hopes to have destroyed the dragon, Kaiba uses Negate Attack to stop the attack from causing any damage.
Having failed to destroy the dragon with his trap, Yugi plays Monster Reborn to resurrect the first Blue-Eyes onto his side of the field. Using the Mystical Elf's special power to transfer its ATK onto the dragon, Yugi attacks the fake Kaiba's Blue-Eyes, destroying it and reducing his life points to 0.
As he banishes the fake Kaiba to the Shadow Realm once more, Yugi senses that Pegasus is watching and warns him that he will defeat him when they next meet. However Pegasus seems confident that even with his improved skills Yugi will still be unable to beat him in a duel.
As the group congratualtes Yugi for winning the duel, they realise that Kemo has escaped and taken Mokuba with him. However Yugi is confident that together the group can defeat Pegasus and rescue Mokuba, but to do so they will need to win some more star chips.
Episode 11 - Dino Dimwit, Rex Raptor
With Mokuba gone again, the group decide to try and find more duellists to fight in order to win entry to Pegasus's castle. But as the group prepares to head off, Joey notices some Duel Monsters cards lying on the floor and goes to pick them up as Tristan stops him. Tristan explains that he is collecting the cards because he wants to learn to duel and after seeing how good Joey has become he thinks he can become an expert really quickly.
As Joey glances at Tristan's cards, he notices that one of Tristan's cards looks like one of the cards in his own deck. Pulling the green Swamp Battleguard from his deck, Joey notices that it is almost identical to Tristan's red Lava Battleguard. The two notice that the cards say they work well when used together and Joey agrees to try the card out in his deck.
Elsewhere on the island, Mai has grown bored of defeating weak duellists after Joey defeated her. As she tries to think of a way to get her own back on Joey, Rex Raptor arrives and challenges her to a rematch to get his own back for her defeating him on the boat to the island. Initially Mai refuses to duel Rex, but takes the opportunity to show off that she has eight star chips and he only has five. However Mai changes her mind, offering to duel Rex on the condition that he beat Joey in a duel first.
As Joey and Yugi search for their next opponents, Tristan and Téa tease Joey that he should try and find a monkey to duel against as he might lose to anybody smarter. As Joey tries to ignore their jibes, Mai arrives and begins taunting Joey, claiming that he can only win duels if Yugi is there to help him. Mai challenges Joey to duel Rex on his own, without Yugi's support from the sidelines. Joey is eager to agree, but his friends try to dissuade him.
Mai warns Joey and Yugi that if any help is offered from the sidelines then Joey will forfeit the match immediately. Determined to prove that he can win on his won, Joey agrees to the conditions, but as he and Rex prepare to duel, Tristan argues with Joey and heads off on his own.
As each player bets two star chips on the outcome of the duel, Joey is worried that he still hasn't learnt how to use the field power bonuses to his advantage, however he is confident that if he uses his Time Wizard and Baby Dragon that he should be able to win. When he draws both in his opening hand his confidence grows, but as Joey begins to duel, he notices that Yugi has also headed off, leaving Téa on her own to offer support.
Confident that he has the duel in the bag, Joey plays the Baby Dragon in defence mode on his first turn. But rather than throwing Rex off guard with the unusual play, Joey has only made things easier for his opponent. As Rex plays the Tow-Headed King Rex, he easily crushes Joey's dragon, wiping out his main chance of winning the duel.
As Joey plays Leogun, Rex destroys it with his King Rex, reducing Joey's life points to 1670. However Joey counters with the Axe Raider and, gaining a field power bonus, destroys Rex's monster, reducing his life points to 1870. Unfazed, Rex plays the Sword Armour Dragon and destroys Joey's monster, reducing his life points to 1605. As Joey searches for a way to win the duel, Téa tells him not to give up yet.
Elsewhere on the island, Yugi has found Tristan and the two are discussing why they left. Tristan tells Yugi that Joey needs him to be there to support him, but Yugi tells him that he can't help as Joey will forfeit the duel. Yugi tells Tristan that Joey needs his support most of all as the two of them are best friends.
Unsure of what to do next, Joey plays the Time Wizard onto the field, but doesn't do anything with it. Mai tries to warn Rex that Joey could use it to win, but Rex ignores her, confident that he won't lose. As Joey plays the Rock Ogre in defence mode, Rex plays Mega Zelger, but as Joey plays the Flame Swordsman, he learns that dinosaurs are weak against fire and takes his chance, destroying Rex's monster and reducing his life points to 1330.
Beginning to doubt how easy the duel will be to win, Rex switches his Sword Armour Dragon to defence mode, but as he does so Joey destroys it with his Swordsman before playing the Swamp Battleguard. However Rex counters with the Serpent Knight Dragon, destroying Joey's Swordsman.
As Joey draws his next card, he sees that it is the card that Tristan gave him. As Joey remembers all the good times he and Tristan have shared together, he realises that Tristan hasn't been babying him over the years but has been looking out for him as friends should. As the flashback comes to an end, Tristan and Yugi arrive back at the field, and Tristan suggests that Joey should try playing his monster.
Playing the Lava Battleguard, Joey can but watch as Rex's dragon attacks his Swamp Battleguard. However as the smoke of the blast clears, Joey sees that the Lava Battleguard has deflected the attack, destroying Rex's dragon and reducing his life points to 810.
Joey realises that his two monsters work together with each other to keep both of them out of danger, just like him and Tristan do. However as Joey is confident that his team work will help him win, he doesn't realise that Rex still has his strongest monster waiting in the wings.
Episode 12 - Dark Brother of the Blue Eyes
With Joey's two Battleguards having carevd through Rex's monster, he plays Dracodon in defence mode where it is easily destroyed. However as Joey beliees that he has befeated Rex's most powerful monster, the Serpent Knight Dragon, Rex reveals that he has an even more powerful dragon, the Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
As Joey is shocked to see such a powerful monster, Yugi is amazed to learn that the monster is not just a rumour. As Rex plays his dragon onto the field, he explains that its power is almost as great as the Blue-Eyes, especially once it has been powered up with the Dragon Nails. Attacking with his souped-up dragon, Rex destroys both of Joey's Battleguards in one go, reducing his life points to 235.
As Joey's confidence begins to wane, Téa tells him that she is sure he can defeat Rex if he only puts his mind to it. Yugi is also certain that Joey can win, and even knows how, but he can't tell Joey without losing him the match. Tristan tells Joey to keep fighting and tells him that duelling is about heart not strength.
As Rex listens to the cherrleading of Joey's friends, he remembers that joey still has the Time Wizard in play. Realising that it could be a useful asset in his duel against Mai, Rex suggests to Joey that the two put their current card on the field up for grabs as well as the star chips. At first Joey doesn't think he has a card in play, but then remembers the Time Wizard. As Joey agrees to the deal, Mai realises what Rex is planning, however neither of them know what Joey is planning.
Having realised thathe still has the Time Wizard in play, Joey takes the risk on its Time Roulette in an attempt to cause time on the field to advance. However while landing on a Time Machine symbol will cause time to change on the field, landing on a skull will cause the Time Wizard to be destroyed. As the Roulette lands on a Time Machine, time advances on the field and when it comes to a stop, Rex's Red-Eyes has been fossilised.
As the fossilised dragon crumbles to dust, its destruction wipes out Rex's remaining life points ad Joey wins the duel. Later that evening, the group decide to set up camp when Mai arrives and offers to share her food with the group. She explains that she only needs two more star chips and so all the food will go to waste after that. As Yugi heads off to collect firewood and Joey and Tristan go in search of water, Téa takes a shower, but hears a rustling in the bushes. However when she and Mai check out what it was, there is nothing there.
After the group finished their meal, Yugi and Mai discuss the tournament with each other, and Yugi admits that he is impressed with Mai's progress. However Mai is still unsure about socialising with potential rivals and decides to take a walk. However as she makes her way into a clearing, a shadowy figure emerges from the bushes and grabs her.
As the group begin to worry about where Mai could have gone, their classmate Bakura emerges into the clearing, proving that Téa was right all along about him being on the island. The group of five stay up talking and the topic turns to duelling. Joey mentions that when he's fighting a duel, he pretends that he is one of the monsters. Bakura asks the group which cards they each relate with.
Joey's favourite card is the Flame Swordsman, while Tristan's favourite is the Cyber Commander. Yugi's favourite is obviously the Dark Magician, while Téa likes the Magician of Faith. Bakura's favourite card is the Change of Heart, a card that Yugi has never heard of until then. Bakura then suggests that they hold a normal duel, with all of their favourite cards in the decks. Yugi and Joey warn Bakura that a four-against-one duel isn't very fair odds, but he doesn't seem concerned.
As the duel begins, Bakura reveals his Millennium Ring and transports the group to the Shadow Realm. Sealing the souls of Yugi and the others inside the deck, he prepares to take the Millennium Puzzle as it is activated, awaking the spirit of Yami Yugi from inside of it. As Yami warns Bakura that he will not let him take the Puzzle, the two prepare for a duel unlike any either player has ever seen before.
Episode 13 - The Millenium Ring
With the two ancient spirits preparing to duel each other inside their host bodies, Yami Yugi asks Yami Bakura why he has taken them to the Shadow Realm. The spirit of Bakura's Millennium Ring explains that he is a thief of souls, determined to collect all seven Millennium Items.
As the Shadow game begins, Yami Yugi plays the Cyber Commander, Tristan's favourite card. But as the monster on the card comes to life, it is Tristan that appears, dressed up as the Cyber Commander. As Yami Yugi realises that his friends must have become sealed within the cards, Yami Bakura plays the White Magical Hat and destroys Tristan, sending him to the graveyard.
As Tristan finds himself in the card graveyard, Yami Yugi plays the Flame Swordsman, however the Swordsman turns out to be Joey. Yugi explains to Joey what has happened and explains that he will need his help to defeat the evil spirit inside Bakura. As Joey attacks, he destroys Bakura's monster, reducing his life points to 1200.
As Bakura makes his next move, he plays one card face down. Yami warns Joey not to attack it, but he is too stubborn to listen and attacks any way, activating the Morphing Jar, a card that forces both players to discard their current hand to the graveyard. As Yami Yugi draws his next card, the Dark Magician, Bakura plays a monster face down in defence mode and another card face down.
As Yami begins his turn, he revives Tristan using Monster Reborn and then plays the Dark Magician. However as Yugi comes to life as the Dark Magician, all three friends are confused as to who the big Yugi could be, however they all seem sure that they should trust him. As the Dark Magician attacks, Bakura reveals a second Morphing Jar, once again discarding both players hand to their graveyard.
As Yami Yugi draws the Magician of Faith, Yami Bakura plays a face down monster in defence mode and then activates the Just Desserts card, reducing Yami Yugi's life points to 500. As Yami plays the Magician of Faith (Téa) face down in defence mode, the others try to hide her from Bakura in an attempt to protect her.
Yugi attacks Bakura's monster, but he reveals it to be the Electric Lizard, a monster which paralyzes its opponent for one turn. As Yami Yugi plays a trap card of his own, Bakura plays the Man-Eater Bug, a monster with the power to destroy one of the opponent's monsters. As the group try to find a way to destroy the monster without attacking it, Yami suggests that they could use the Horn of Heaven, however it would require a sacrifice from his side of the field.
As Joey offers to be sacrificed, Yugi activates his trap card, destroying Bakura's Bug. However as Yugi and Bakura continue to duel, Joey finds himself trapped in the graveyard with the Reaper of the Cards advancing on him, ready to destroy him. Bakura warns Yami that there is no way to revive Joey, seeing as how he has already used his only Monster Reborn card, but Yami is not so sure.
As Téa begins to worry about Joey, her special power is activated, returning Monster Reborn to Yami's hand. As Yami Yugi uses the Magic card to revive Joey, Yami Bakura mocks his pathetic efforts to save his friends rather than trying to win the duel. As Yami Bakura plays the Lady of Faith, he warns the Dark Magician Yugi that he will destroy his own friends once he has played his next card.
As Yami Bakura plays the Change of Heart card to take control of Yugi for one turn, the spirit of the real Bakura is trapped inside of the card and takes control of the Lady of Faith instead of the Dark Magician. As Bakura tells Yugi to attack him, Yami Yugi uses the Millennium Puzzle to switch the souls of Bakura with that of the evil spirit, sealing the spirit within the Lady of Faith. As Yugi attacks the Lady of Faith, he destroys Yami Bakura, releasing his control over the group.
As the group returns to the real world, Yugi asks Bakura how he got the Millennium Ring, and Bakura explains that his father bought it from an Egyptian market and gave it to Bakura, claiming that he was destined to have it. As Joey, Tristan and Téa wake up they all believe that the duel was nothing more than a bad dream, but Yugi and Bakura both know the truth. However as the group continues to talk, they hear someone scream in the distance ad rush off to see what has happened.
Episode 14 - The Light at the End of the Tunnel
Having heard somebody scream, Yugi, Joey, Tristan, Téa and Bakura run to see what has happened. Reaching a nearby duelling arena, they arrive just in time to see Mai's Harpy Lady Sisters be defeated in a duel. As Mai looks on in dismay, her opponent introduces himself as Panik, one of the Duellist Kingdom Eliminators.
As Panik claims all of Mai's star chips, Mai warns the group to get away before Panik gets to them as well, but Yugi stands strong, challenging Panik to a duel to win back Mai's star chips. Mai tries to persuade Yugi not to duel Panik, unsure as to whether he would be able to win, but Panik seems eager to duel Yugi.
He explains that Pegasus has offered a generous bounty to the eliminator who defeats Yugi, but warns Yugi that he would be willing to defeat him even if there wasn't any reward. As the two prepare to duel, Panik explains that there is more to duelling than strategy and Mai warns Yugi that Panik is a ruthless duellist, however Yugi is still determined to duel.
As Yugi steps up to the duelling arena, his feet are clasped into place to prevent him from moving and then bursts of flame shoot out, barely missing him. As Mai and the others doubt that Yugi can win, he still seems confident in his chances.
However as Panik plays his first card, the Castle of Dark Illusions, things don't seem to be going in Yugi's favour. As the Castle appears on the field, it smothers Panik's half of the arena in darkness, preventing Yugi from seeing which cards Panik has played. Panik explains that on this arena the only source of a field power bonus is the night.
An uneasy Yugi plays the Celtic Guardian in defence mode, but as Panik plays a monster onto the field he attacks Yugi's Guardian, destroying it. Realising that he can't attack monsters he can't see, Yugi looks for a way to destroy the Castle of Dark Illusions, but with the field power bonus it is nearly impenetrable.
As Yugi plays the Winged Dragon in defence mode, Panik senses that his opponent is beginning to fret as he plays a second monster into the darkness. However as Yugi's turn begins, he uses the Winged Dragon to attack the darkness, temporarily revealing the monsters that Panik has on the field. Even so, Panik attacks the Dragon, destroying it and reducing Yugi's life points to 1606.
Panik begins to taunt Yugi, telling him that he can't win as long as the Castle of Dark Illusions is still in play, but Yugi is unfazed and begins to laugh at Panik, telling him that he knows exactly how to win. Showing Panik the Sowrds of Revealing Light, he tells him that he will use it to stop his monsters and dispel the darkness. As Mai watches on, shocked at the amateurish mostake Yugi has made in announcing his strateg, Yugi warns Panik that he will defeat him in five turns.
As Yugi plays the Curse of Dragon in defence mode, he also plays a card face down, warning Panik that this card will make him see the light. Certain that the card is Yugi's Swords of Revealing Light, Panik summons the Reaper of the Cards to destroy Yugi's Magic card. However as the Reaper attacks, it is unable to finish the move as Yugi reveals that the card was not his Revealing Light but actually the Spell Binding Circle.
With the Reaper of the Cards caught within Yugi's trap he is free to play his Revealing Light whenever he wants. As Mai looks on, amazed at Yugi's strength in such tough conditions, Yugi decides the time has come to play the Swords of Revealing Light. Playing one card face down, Yugi activates the Swords, flooding Panik's side of the field in a bright light which not only reveals his monsters but prevents them from attacking. However while Yugi seems confident that he can keep his promise to defeat Panik within the next four turns, Panik also seems sure that victory will be his.
Episode 15 - Winning Through Intimidation
With both duellists convinced that they can still win the duel, it seems like victory could go either way depending on the next few turns. With Yugi prepared to activate the Sowrds of Revealing Light, it could all be over for Panik's intimidation tactics, however every duellist must have a back-up plan.
As Panik plays the King of Yamimakai, he attacks Yugi's Curse of Dragon, hoping to wipe it out. However sa the attack rushes towards Yugi's monster, it is drawn away by the Spell Binding Circle, destroying Panik's own Reaper of the Cards instead, reducing his life points to 494. With Panik's monster destoryed, Yugi decides the time has come to acitvate the Swords of Revealing Light, revealing all of Panik's monsters and sealing them where they are for three whole turns.
With Panik's side of the field once again visible, Yugi is able to see what Panik's other two monsters are: Barroks and Dark Chimera. However as Yugi's plan begins to come together, Panik throws a spanner in the works as he plays equips the Castle of Dark Illusions with the Chaos Shield, a forcefield that protects his monsters from any attack Yugi might throw at them.
As Mai worrites that Yugi won't be able to win, Yugi warns Panik that intimidation and cowardice won't help him win. A furious Panik activates the flamethrowers stationed either side of Yugi, but he dodges them with ease, hardly breaking a sweat. As a game of mental warfare begins, Yugi uses Polymerisation to fuse his Curse of Dragon with Gaia the Fierce Knight to form Gaia the Dragon Champion.
Panik plays the Metal Guardian onto the field, but refrains from attacking with it, and as Yugi's final turn begins his friends wonder whether he will be able to defeat Panik after all. As Yugi plays the Catapult Turtle, he uses it to fire his Dragon Champion into the Castle of Dark Illusions. However as the smoke from the balst clears, Yugi's Champion is gone, reducing his life points to 300 while the Castle has merely lost its flotation ring.
As Panik mock's Yugi's fruitless claim to defeat him in five turns, Yugi warns him that he will still win before Panik's turn begins. As Yugi finishes his turn, the Swords of Revealing Light begin to fade, releasing Panik's monsters from their paralysis. However as Panik prepares to make his move, Yugi points out that without a floatation ring the Castle is no longer able to stay airborn.
As the Castle plummets to the ground, Panik's monsters are trapped by the Chaos Shield, preventing them from evading the Castle's impact. The impact destroys Panik's monsters, reducing his life points to zero. A furious Panik uses the flamethrowers in an attempt to destryo Yugi, but the power of the Millennium Puzzle protects both Ygi and his friends from the flames and as the flames clear, Yugi uses the Millennium Puzzle on Panik to seal away the dark side of him.
With Panik defeated, Yugi tries to give Mai back her star chips, but she refuses to take them even though that was the only reason Yugi duelled Panik in the first place. But as Joey jokingly offers to take the chips instead, Mai gets annoyed with him and orders him to give them to her. Joey willingly does so, explaining that she should stop being so defensive and start trying to like people.
With her star chips back in the duelling glove, Mai promises Yugi that she will repay him for what he has done and the two agree to look forwards to eventually duelling each other, whenever the time may come to do so.
Episode 16 - The Scars of Defeat
As the duels continues on the island, Pegasus is mulling over his plans to take over Kaibacorp once Yugi has been defeated. Although he still faces the problem of Seto Kaiba being alive, he still has Mokuba captive and can use him to exploit Kaibacorp's technology for his own means.
While Pegasus broods over his next move, Kaiba is making his way to the Duellist Kingdom in a helicopter, determined to take out Pegasus. However after watching Yugi duel twice Kaiba is beginning to doubt that his old duelling methods will help him win, but with so much at stake he can't afford to change his tactics at such a late stage.
Down on the island, Joey, Tristan and Téa are all asleep, but Yugi and Bakura are still awake and talking. Bakura shows Yugi how one of the points on his Millennium Ring is tugging towards Pegasus's castle, just like it did when he first met Yugi at school. Yugi explains that it is probably being drawn to the other Millennium Items, commenting that he senses a strong presence within his Millennium Puzzle. As the two continue to talk, Kaiba's helicopter lands nearby waking the others.
As Kaiba steps out of the chopper, Yugi returns his deck to him, having reclaimed it from the fake Kaiba Yugi suggests that he and Kaiba should work together, but Kaiba tells Yugi to stop being so naive and that to him this is not some duelling contest but a matter of saving his brother and his company.
Joey tells Kaiba that he isn't the only duellist wanting to face Pegasus to help someone they care for and tells him that he has no more of a right to duel Pegasus than Yugi does. Kaiba is amused by Joey's anger , even more so when Joey challenges him to a duel. As Joey accuses Kaiba of being a washed up has-been after losing to Yugi, Kaiba accepts Joey's challenge, but only on the condition that they use his Duelling Disc system.
After explaining to Joey how the portable duelling system works, Kaiba begins the duel by playing the Battle Ox. Joey counters with the Armoured Lizard but it is easily defeated, reducing his life points to 1800. Kaiba warns Joey that the technology is intended to make a duellist think on his feet, something Joey is obviously not very good at as his Flame Swordsman gets destroyed, reducing his life points to 1600.
For Kaiba's next turn, he fuses his Battle Ox with the Mystic Horseman to create the Rapid Horseman, an even stronger monster. Joey tries to defeat the monster, but none of his cards are strong enough as Kaiba beats them all down, reducing his life points each time: Swamp Battleguard (1400LP), Axe Radier (1100LP), Battle Steer (900LP), Garoozis (700LP) and Rude Kaiser (500LP).
Unable to see a way to defeat Kaiba's monster, Joey collapses with despair, but Tristan tells him that he can still win from behind. As Joey draws his next card, it seems the heart of the cards is on his side as he summons the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, defeating Kaiba's monster and reducing his life points to 1600. However as Kaiba congratulates Joey on having such a strong monster, he reminds him that there is another monster even more powerful than it is.
Summoning the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Kaiba crushes Joey's Red-Eyes and wipes out his remaining life points. As Joey drops to the floor, scared and humiliated, Yugi confronts Kaiba, asking him why he had to humiliate Joey like that. Kaiba replies telling Yugi that Pegasus would be no more merciful than he was and that if Joey can't stand the pressure then perhaps he should stop duelling. He warns Yugi that Pegasus has every card at his disposal, making him the toughest opponent of all.
In an attempt to convince Yugi of Pegasus's ruthlessness, Kaiba tells the group about the last time he met the creator of Duel Monsters: "At the Inter-continental Championship in New York City, Kaiba had been invited to watch the contest as pegasus's guest. After the tournament had ended, Pegasus took the stand for an exhibition match against the champion, Bandit Keith. However while Keith seemed to be playing well it was obvious that Pegasus was toying with him.
As Keith prepared to play the card that he thoguh would win him the match, Pegasus told him that even a child could defeat him. Writing some insturctions onto a piece of paper, Pegasus called out a young boy from the audience. Giving the child the insturctions, he allowed Keith to make his play. As Keith made the play, the boy followed Pegasus's instructions and easily defeated Keith. As the crowd cheered the young boy, Keith was shocked to see that his final moves had all been predicted by Pegasus, a fact that shocked both Keith and Kaiba."
As Kaiba finishes his story, Yugi tells Kaiba that he knows about Pegasus and his ability to see what cards his opponent has, but he still doesn't understand why Kaiba had to humiliate Joey the way that he did. As Kaiba heads off for Pegasus's castle, both he and Yugi hope that the other one will succeed but he hopes to do so without having to cross paths with Yugi again. But with Pegasus watching everything with the help of security cameras, guards and the Millennium Eye will either of the two duellists succeed in their quest?
Episode 17 - Arena of Lost Souls: Part 1
While the rest of the group sleeps, Joey's dreams are haunted by the defeat that Kaiba dealt him earlier that evening. Trapped in a foggy wasteland, Joey is being chased by a Blue-Eyes White Dragon, but as he tries to run away from it he stumbles and falls. As he begs Kaiba to call of his Blue-Eyes, Joey is humiliated by Kaiba who calls him a snivelling dog.
As he wakes from the dream, Joey is still angry about losing to kaiba and wakes the others, eager to find somebody to duel. Téa arrives from where she had been sleeping and Yugi is surprised that Mai isn't with her. Téa passes Yugi a note from Mai telling him that she has gone off again to duel and taken the star chips he won back for her, however she promises to pay him back for them some time.
Bakura comments that there can't be many duellists left now, but Tristan is sure that both Joey and yugi will make it to the finals of the tournament because they're duelling for the ones they love. Yugi warns Joey that the duels they fight from now on will be tougher than ever and Joey starts to worry that he won't be good enough, but Yugi is confident that they can both do it. As the group continues to talk they don't realise that they are being watched by a trio of duellists. One of the three, Bones, decides that he wants to duel Joey, but before he can the three head off to find their boss.
Elsewhere on the island, Bones and his fellow goons report back to their boss, inter-continental champion Bandit Keith. Keith is impressed to hear that the group found Yugi, but decides that it would be better to go after to Joey instead. As the group heads off to find Joey, Keith is determined to make Pegasus pay for humiliating him when the two last met.
As Keith and Bones head off into a dark cave to prepare Bones' Zombie deck for the duel, Joey has the feeling that somebody is stalking him and has split away from the rest of the group. As Joey finds his way to a waterfall Keith's two goons grab him and knock him out. When Joey finally wakes up he finds himself in a duelling arena in a creepy cave. Bones appears at the other end of the arena and in an attempt to psyche him out tells Joey that this is the Arena of Lost Souls.
While Yugi and the others are beginning to grow concerned that they can't find Joey anywhere, their friend is terrified as Bones tries to force him to duel. As Joey tries to leave the arena, Keith tells him that he can leave whevnever he wants, as long as he gives up all of his star chips. Determined not to lose his chips, Joey agrees to duel, putting four star chips up for grabs.
As the duel begins, Bones goes to play a zombie card, but Keith tells him to play Zanki instead. However Joey plays the Axe Raider and easily destroys the monster, reducing Bones' life points to 1800. Bones is annoyed that Joey destroyed his monster and prepares to play a zombie, but Keith tells him to play the Crawling Dragon instead. Bones does so, but plays the monster in defence mode where Joey easily destroys it.
As Keith assures the fuming Bones that he is working on a strategy, he tells Bones not to play the next monster in defence mode in case Joey doesn't attack it. As Bones plays the Crass Clown, Joey plays the Flame Swordsman and easily destroys it, reducing Bones' life points to 1350. However as Joey's confidence builds, Bones plays the Call of the Haunted, reviving all three of his lost monsters as indestructable zombies that gain a field power bonus from the graveyard field.
Back at the waterfall, Téa finds Joey's wallet and realises that something must have happened to him. Finding the cave, the group head inside in the hopes of finding Joey, but instead they find a group of coffins with fake skeletons inside them, Pegasus's idea of a sick joke.
As the group continues further into the cave in search of Joey, their friend isn't holding up very well on the duelling field. As Bones' Dragon Zombie destroys Joey's Axe Raider, reducing his life points to 1620, Joey's Flame Swordsman is outnumbered three to one. And with Bones' zombies unaffected by any attack on them there may be no way for Joey to win.
Episode 18 - Arena of Lost Souls: Part 2
With three zombies ready to attack whenever they want, Bones seems confident that there is no way for him to lose, and as Joey makes his move it seems like his confidence may not be premature. As Garoozis attacks the zombies the Call of the Haunted revives them, making them stronger than they were before. And as the Clown Zombie attacks, it destorys Joey's monster, reducing his life points to 1530.
As the duel continues, Yugi and the others are still working their way through the cave in the hopes of finding Joey. As they notice that Bakura has gone missing, they hear him scream and find that one of Pegasus's fake skeletons has fallen on top of him. With the skeleton removed, they continue through the cave until they find themselves at a junction.
As they try to decide which way to go, Bakura accidentaly triggers a hidden switch causing a giant boulder to roll towards them. Running away from the boulder, Bakura trips and is crushed by it, but as the others become trapped at a dead end Tristan tries to stop the boulder and it bursts, just another one of Pegasus's sick jokes.
Back at the duelling arena Joey can't see any way to defeat the zombies and is beginning to worry that he will face another crushing defeat like the one that Kaiba dealt him. Drawing the Time Wizard, Joey hopes that he can use its Time Magic to destroy the zombies, but as he uses the Time Roulette it lands on a skull. As a vortex apperas over Joey's side of the field it absorbs both the Time Wizard and the Flame Swordsman, reducing Joey's life points to 630 in the process.
Coming to terms with the effects of failing the time spin, Joey plays a monster in defence mode, but as Bones' turn begins, Keith tells him to humiliate Joey rather than just beat him. Playing the Pumpking, Bones uses its ectoplasmic fortification to increase the ATK of his zombies before destroying Joey's monster. As Joey plays the Armoured Lizard in defence mode, Bones once again uses Pumpking's ectoplasm to increase the ATK of his zombies further still. Destroying Joey's lizard, the creepy duellist becomes confident that he will win, especially as Joey plays yet another monster in defence mode which he easily destroys.
As the duel rages, Yugi and the others finally arrive at the arena and try to get Joey to stop duelling, but Keith warns them that if he does then Joey will forfeit the match. As Tristan throws Joey's wallet back to him, Joey asks Bones' back-seat dueller who he is, and the group learns that he is Bandit Keith, the duellist that Kaiba told them about.
As Joey plays another monster in defence mode, Bones plays Stop Defence to prevent any monster being played in Defence mode. As his friends call out words of encouragement, Joey plays the Red-Eyes Black Dragon in attack mode, a move that shocks Keith who didn't expect such a pathetic duellist to have such a powerful card. As the Red-Eyes attacks, it destroys Bones' Pumpking, reducing his life points to 855. But Bones retaliates with his Dragon Zombie, destroying Joey's Red-Eyes and reducing his life points to 150.
Looking through his hand, Joey can't see any way to win with his only other monster, the Battle Warrior, but Yugi calls out to him telling him that there is a way to win. Trusting in the cards, Joey pulls his final card, the Shield and Sword. Playing the Battle Warrior, Joey activates the Shield and Sword card to reverse the ATK and DEF of every monster on the field. With all the zombies ATK reduced to 0, Joey is able to destroy them, reducing Bones' life points to zero.
As Joey celebrates his win, Keith storms off, disgraced that his duellist could have lost. As Keith goes to leave the arena, Joey tells him to try duelling face to face next time, but Keith tells him that the only thing that matters is winning, not who does it for you. Joey thanks Yugi for his support and comments on how lucky his last draw was, but yugi tells him that it was his faith in the cards that helped him out, not luck.
As the group head for the exit of the cave, a boulder begins to seal off their only exit. Outside the cave, Keith and his goons finish blocking the cave entrance, but as the trio try to apologise to Keith for losing he steals their star chips and heads for Pegasus's castle with a completed duelling glove. However it seems that Yugi and Joey may never make it to Pegasus's castle unless they can find a way out of the cave alive.
Episode 19 - Double Trouble Duel: Part 1
With the main way out well and truly blocked, Yugi and the others start to search for another way out of the cave when Bakura's Millennium Ring starts reacting again. Hoping that the Ring will pull lead them to Pegasus and a way out of the cave, the group decide to follow it, however what they don't realise is that they are being watched by Pegasus from the comfort of his castle.
Tired with watching Yugi and his friends, Pegasus turns his attention to the screen showing Mokuba trapped in a dungeon cell. Although he is still captive, Mokuba is positive that his big brother will come for him, like he did when their parent's passed away and he's sure that there is no way that Kaiba can lose against Pegasus.
As the Millennium Ring leads the group through tunnel after tunnel, Téa comes to the conclusion that the maze of passages has been man-made, probably by Pegasus. Finally arriving at a large room, the group find themselves meeting the Paradox Brothers. The two brothers tell the group that in order to continue past this room the group will have to defeat them in a duel. Yugi doesn't seem too worried about this until the brothers inform him that they are both Eliminators, hired by Pegasus to defeat him.
As Yugi prepares to face the brothers, they inform the group that there is a second challenge that they will face if they do defeat the brothers. At the other side of the room are two doors and while one leads to an exit the other leads to an endless maze of tunnels. Deciding to focus on the duel, Yugi challenges the brothers but they inform him that on this field the duel must be a two-on-two team game. Yugi agrees, asking Joey to duel alongside him and together the pair risk a total of six star chips, enough to give both of them entrance to the castle.
As the four duellists prepare to fight, Kaiba is heading towards Pegasus's castle in order to find and rescue his brother. However back at the duelling arena Dox plays the Labyrinth Wall, causing the field to be transformed into a giant labyrinth. As Para pressurises Yugi to make his move, Joey demands that the brothers explain how to duel on a labyrinth field.
Para explains that each player starts with 2000 life points, but the first player to be reduced to zero life points loses the match for both players in his team. Play will alternate between the four players in the order of Dox, then Yugi, then Para and finally Joey. With regards to the monsters, they act like pieces in a board game and each turn a monster can move the number of squares equal to their power level.
As Yugi and Joey take in the rules, the brothers remind them of the problem of choosing between the two doors but in order to make it easier for the two Para tells them that from now on one of the brothers will speak the whole truth while the other will only ever lie. As Para tells the pair that they only need ask which door they should pick, Joey remembers a puzzle much like this:
"A boy arrives at a junction with two roads leading from it, one to Truthsville and one to Liarsberg. A man is standing at the junction but the boy does not know which town he is from. In order to be taken to Truthsville, the boy asks the villager to take him to their own village, seeing as both villagers would have to take him to Truthsville (as the lair could not take him to Liarsberg without telling the truth)."
Certain that the question will solve their problem, Joey challenges the two to point to the right door, and both point to the door that Dox is guarding. However while Joey is sure that this proves that Dox is the truthful brother, Yugi is not so sure. Yugi explains that both brothers have told the two the same fact, that one will be truthful and one will lie. However for both brothers to say this they must both be liars as the lying brother could never admit to being a liar. He tells Joey to forget the puzzle for now as it is only meant to distract them from the duel.
However as Yugi plays the Beaver Warrior and moves it four spaces into the maze, Para uses Polymerisation to fuse the Shadow Ghoul into the Labyrinth Wall to create the Wall Shadow, a monster with the power to move anywhere in the wall. The Wall Shadow emerges from the wall and attacks Yugi's Beaver, reducing his life points to 1600.
Joey plays the Axe Raider, plus one card face down, but doesn't move his monster into the labyrinth so that the Wall Shadow cannot attack it. However as Dox plays the Labyrinth Tank and moves it seven spaces into the maze, he also plays Jirai Gumo onto the field, a card that will attack when the opponent's monster steps on it.
As Yugi plays the Celtic Guardian and advances it four spaces into the maze, the Wall Shadow attacks but is trapped by Joey's Cunai with Chain. With the Wall Shadow trapped Yugi is able to destroy it, reducing Para's life points to 1700. However while Tristan is impressed with Joey's tactics, Yugi warns his partner that they will have to stay on their guard if they want to win.
Back at Pegasus's castle, the head of Pegasus's security team, Croquet, informs him that Kaiba has been spotted on the island, a fact that Pegasus already knows. As Mokuba, still trapped in the dungeon, wonders why his big brother hasn't come to rescue him yet, Kaiba makes his way to the castle, ready to make Pegasus pay for what he has done.
Episode 20 - Double Trouble Duel: Part 2
On his way to Pegasus's castle to rescue his brother, Kaiba is on the look out for any guards lying in wait as Kemo tries to ambush him. As Kaiba winds him and knocks him down, he forces the guard to take him to the castle.
Meanwhile back underground the tag team duel is just beginning to heat up as Joey plays the Flame Swordsman before moving both his monsters four spaces into the Labyrinth. However as Joey's monsters make their first steps into the maze, Dox moves his Labyrinth Tank a further seven spaces into the passages towards Yugi and Joey's monsters.
As Yugi's turn begins, he plays the Dark Magician, moving it five spaces into the maze to join his Celtic Guardian. However Para throws a spanner into the works as he activates the Magical Labyrinth card, transforming the Labyrinth passages and separating Yugi and Joey's monsters from each other. As Tristan comments that a tag team is only as strong as its weakest member, Joey begins to worry that he will let Yugi down, but Yugi assures him that everything is fine.
However as Joey moves his monsters to regroup with Yugi's, his Axe Raider activates Jirai Gumo and is destroyed by it, reducing Joey's life points to 1600, and as Dox moves his Labyrinth Tank another seven spaces forwards Joey's Flame Swordsman finds himself in front of two enemies. Not only that, but Dox decides to play another monster into defence mode, however decides to keep the card face down for the time being.
As Yugi's turn begins, he plays the Mystic Box, sealing his Dark Magician within a box before plunging swords into the sides of it. However as his friends believe he has sacrificed his own monster, Yugi reveals a second box has appeared where Dox's Jirai Gumo had been resting. As the two boxes open, Magician and Spider have switched places as Yugi reveals that it was Dox's monster that was destroyed. With his Dark Magician positioned in front of the Labyrinth Tank, Yugi destroys it and reduces Dox's life points to 1900.
Back at Pegasus's castle, Kaiba and Kemo have arrived at the main entrance to the castle, but as Kemo leads Kaiba in he warns his captor that Pegasus probably already knows that he is here. As Kaiba makes his way into the castle, Mokuba is beginning to worry why his big brother has not yet come to rescue him.
As the duel continues, Para plays Sanga of Thunder, a monster that forms one third of the unstoppable Gate Guardian, a monster in the same class as Exodia. However as he plays this monster onto the field, a Chinese Box appears instead, much to the worry of both Yugi and Joey. As Joey moves his Flame Swordsman another five spaces towards the end of the maze, Dox draws Suijin, the second part of the Guardian, and as he plays it a second box appears on the field.
As Yugi continues to fret over the ancient energies being emitted from the boxes, Dox reveals his Dungeon Worm and, powering it up with the Invigoration card, uses it to burrow under the Labyrinth and attack the Celtic Guardian, destroying it and reducing Yugi's life points to 800. However before the brothers have another chance to destroy one of their monsters, Yugi plays the Magical Hats, concealing both his Dark Magician and Joey's Flame Swordsman underneath.
Confident that the Dungeon Worm won't attack in case it finds the Dark Magician, a monster stronger than it is, Yugi does not expects Para's next monster, the Monster Tamer, a monster with a power to control the monsters of an ally on the field, raising their attack power by 600. However as the Dungeon Worm makes it's second attack it once again finds an empty hat.
With only two hats remaining to hide the two monsters, Joey withdraws his Swordsman from it's hiding place and plays Salamandra, increasing the ATK of his monster by 700. As the Swordsman sends a ball of flames down the hole the Worm left, it successfully destroys the Worm and reduces Dox's life points to 1600. However a Yugi and Joey begin to look set to win the duel, Dox draws Kazejin, the final part of the Gate Guardian.
Back at Pegasus's castle, Kemo has lead Kaiba deep into a series of passages on the way to Mokuba's cell. However as Kaiba warns his captive not to try and tricks, his brother is remembering back to the days when the two of them were living in the orphanage. Many families were willing to adopt Kaiba, but none of them wanted Mokuba as well, however Kaiba insisted that they would stick together until a family would take both of them.
As Mokuba continues to reminisce, wondering where his brother has gotten to, Kaiba accidentally sets off the security alarms and flees from Kemo, hoping to find his brother before the guards find him. As Croquet informs Pegasus of Kaiba's presence in the castle, Mokuba hears his brother calling out to him.
Back at the duelling arena, Yugi plays two cards face down and ends his turn, but as Para orders the Gate Guardian to attack the Flame Swordsman, it looks like it could all be over for both Yugi and Joey.
Episode 21 - Double Trouble Duel: Part 3
As the Gate Guardian attacks Joey's Swordsman, Yugi reveals the Mirror Force trap, reflecting the attack back at the monster. However the Guardian reflects the attack away from itself, much to the delight of the brothers until they see that the attack has been deflected towards their Monster Tamer, destroying it and reducing Para's life points to 900. Elsewhere in Pegasus's castle, the guards have given up searching for Kaiba and have decided to increase security around Mokuba instead. However as the guards head off to check on their prisoner, Kaiba follows them right to where his brother is being kept.
Back at the arena, Yugi tells Joey that their best tactic to destroy the Gate Guardian is to destroy it piece by piece. However as Joey's Flame Swordsman attacks the middle section, the water section blocks the attack before flooding the labyrinth with water, destroying Joey's Swordsman and reducing his life points to 1300. However as Yugi's turn begins, he plays one card face down before playing his Summoned Skull.
As the Skull attacks, the water carries its attack through the maze to the Guardian, and as the Guardian tries to block the attack, the brothers are surprised to find that it cannot move. Yugi reveals that when Suijin flooded the labyrinth it also attacked his Magical Hat, activating the Spell Binding Circle trap card. As the Guardian is paralysed in its place, the Skull's electrical attack destroys the water section, reducing Dox's life points to 900 and causing the water on the field to disappear.
As Para's turn begins, he uses Remove Trap to negate the Spell Binding Circle and then ends his turn, passing back to Joey who plays the Red-Eyes Black Dragon. As Yugi activates his Polymerisation card, the Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes fuse to form the Black Skull Dragon, a powerful force to be reckoned with. However as Joey prepares to move the monster, the brothers inform him that the labyrinth is a no-fly zone, meaning that the Dragon is unable to move through the maze.
As his turn begins, Dox plays Ryoku, taking half of Yugi and Joey's life points and adding them to the ATK points of the Gate Guardian. For his turn, Yugi moves the Dark Magician out of the maze before playing Monster Reborn. But as Yugi revives his chosen monster, Para attacks with the Gate Guardian, not expecting Yugi to have revived Suijin, a monster with enough power to block the attack.
As Joey's turn begins he draws the Copycat card and uses it to mimic Ryoku, reducing the brothers' life points and increasing the Black Skull Dragon's ATK to 4000. As Dox's turn begins, he attacks Suijin who uses its tidal barrier to block the attack, however as Yugi is satisfied that his monster is safe, Dox fires a second wave of the attack, destroying Suijin and leaving the Dark Magician as the only monster able to attack the Gate Guardian.
As the two brothers mock Yugi and Joey's failed efforts, Yugi plays Monster Replace, switching his Magician with the Black Skull Dragon, putting it in a position to attack and destroy the Gate Guardian. As the Dragon attacks it destroys the monster and wipes out the last of both Para and Dox's life points. As the two duellists celebrate gaining ten star chips each, the Paradox brothers remind them that they still have the puzzle of the two doors.
As his friends puzzle what to do about the problem, Yugi explains that they can't trust either brother and decides to settle the matter with a simple game. Taking two coins, one with Dox's symbol and one with Para's, Yugi puts one into each hand and then reveals the coin of the door that they won't pick. As he reveals Dox's coin, the brothers tell him that they picked wrong and that Dox's door is the right one.
However as his friends are disheartened that they picked the wrong door, Yugi explains that no matter which door they had picked it would have been wrong as the brothers have to power to change which door is the correct one. Having known the trick, Yugi reveals that the coin in his other hand is also marked with Dox's insignia and therefore they picked the correct door. Yugi explains that the second coin was actually marked with both symbols meaning that they couldn't lose no matter which door was the right one.
As the gang head through the door and on their way out of the tunnels, Kaiba has finally found his way to Mokuba's cell and after knocking out the guards is preparing to set his brother free as Pegasus arrives. As Kaiba threatens Pegasus, his brother's captor warns him that in his castle the only one to make threats is he. Using the Millennium Eye, Pegasus seals Mokuba's soul inside a card and tells him that the only way to free him is to beat Pegasus in a duel. However in order to duel Pegasus, Kaiba must first earn the right by defeating Yugi in a duel. But will Yugi be willing to duel his nemesis when he also has his sights set on defeating Pegasus?
Episode 22 - Face Off: Part 1
As Kaiba considers the chance to duel Yugi again, Pegasus throws him five star chips telling him that he can play Yugi for the other five. Kaiba wants to know why Pegasus is doing this, but he dodges the question, merely saying that he wants to see Kaiba crush Yugi in a duel. Agreeing to the duel, Kaiba heads off to find Yugi, but warns Pegasus that he will be back.
Outside the castle, the gang has finally made their way out of the underground passageways and have emerged next to Pegasus's castle. As Yugi and Joey prepare to head to the castle, Téa is really proud of the way that Yugi has come on since the start of the contest and begins to suspect that there may be two Yugis, the normal one and the one that duels.
As she recalls the two different Yugis that they met during the duel against Bakura, she tries to ask Yugi about it but the others call for the two of them to hurry up because they want to get into the castle. As the others head off, Téa remembers the way Yugi helped her out once when she told him about wanting to be a dancer. He found a dance studio that she could use, but when they went to check it out Téa was attacked and the other Yugi had to save her.
Téa asks Yugi what he remembers about that day, but he tells her that when he came to the mugger was already down and he didn't know what had happened. As the gang calls out again for the two to hurry up, the all head off for Pegasus's castle, only to kind Kaiba there waiting for them. As the group wonder why he is there, Kaiba challenges Yugi to duel him for the right to face Pegasus but Yugi refuses, not wanting to risk his star chips on a revenge match.
As Kaiba taunts Yugi and calls him a coward, Joey challenges Kaiba but the others hold him back, reminding him of what happened last time the two duelled. Kaiba is shocked to see that Joey has earned ten star chips, but is still determined to fight Yugi, telling his rival that he now understands the heart of the cards. Sensing Kaiba's newfound passion, Yugi is unable to refuse and as the Puzzle causes him to transform, Téa notices the change in him once again.
As the group heads off to the duelling field on the annex roof, Bandit Keith arrives and gains entrance to the castle, but Kemo tells him that the real action is just about to start. As Yugi and Kaiba prepare to duel, each player puts five star chips up for grabs and then loads their deck into one of Kaiba's duelling discs. As Keith looks on from one of the towers, he is surprised to see that Yugi and the others escaped the tunnels, but looks forwards to watching the match.
As the duel begins, Kaiba plays Ryu-Kishin, but Yugi's Curse of Dragon easily destroys it, reducing his life points to 1600. However as Yugi grows confident at his early lead, Kaiba plays Swordstalker, a monster that gains a 20% ATK bonus is a monster has been destroyed. However as Kaiba's powered-up monster attacks, Yugi uses Monster Replace to switch his Curse of Dragon for the Dark Magician, destroying the Swordstalker and knocking Kaiba's life points down to 1500.
As Kaiba looks on unfazed, Yugi replays the Curse of Dragon onto the field and ends his turn. For his next turn, Kaiba plays La Jinn, but as Yugi's Dark Magician attacks it Kaiba reveals the Ancient Lamp, sealing his genie inside and reflecting the attack back at Curse of Dragon, reducing Yugi's life points to 1500 as well.
Yugi congratulates Kaiba on the move, commenting that the scores are currently tied, but what Yugi doesn't realise is that Kaiba is stalling until he can draw all three Blue-Eyes White Dragons, and that's when the fun will really begin.
Episode 23 - Face Off: Part 2
As the duel between Yugi and Kaiba continues, Yugi's friends are still confident that he will win but Yugi is not so sure, worried that Kaiba isn't toying with him like he usually does when duelling. As Kaiba plays the De-Spell card, destroying Yugi's Swords of Revealing Light, we warns his rival that there is no way to defeat him now that he has lost Exodia.
With Kaiba's La Jinn still safe inside the Ancient Lamp, Yugi plays the Eye of Truth to allow him to see Kaiba's hand, and is surprised to learn that Kaiba has a Blue-Eyes in his hand but hasn't played it, not knowing Kaiba's plan to fuse all three Blue-Eyes together. Knowing what cards Kaiba has in his hand, Yugi plays the Mystic Box, destroying Kaiba's Ancient Lamp, and then uses the Dark magician to eliminate La Jinn, reducing Kaiba's life points to 800.
As Kaiba threatens Yugi with the promise that he will eventually play the Blue-Eyes, he decides to teach Yugi a lesson, playing Saggi the Dark Clown and equipping it, face down, with the Crush card virus. Having seen kaiba's hand on the last turn, Yugi knows that Kaiba hadn't had any trap cards, but as he doesn't know what Kaiba drew at the beginning of this turn Yugi decides to recall the Dark Magician, playing Gaia the Fierce Knight instead.
However as Yugi's monster destroys the Dark Clown, both of Yugi's monsters are destroyed as well as the Crush virus spreads through Yugi's deck, infecting all monsters with an ATK of 1500 or higher and making them unable to be played. As Yugi's friends continue to cheer him on, they begin to worry that Yugi won't be able to win if he is forced to play only weak monsters and magic cards
Yugi draws the Summoned Skull, but it is infected with the virus and so he plays Silver Fang in defence mode, however as Kaiba draws his second Blue-Eyes, he plays the Battle Ox, destroying Yugi's monster. As Kaiba grows confident that he will win, Yugi plays Gryphor onto the field, powering it up with the Horn of the Unicorn to make it stronger than Kaiba's Ox, reducing his life points to 600.
Shocked by the combo attack, Kaiba uses the Mystical Elf's Blessing to increase his life points to 900 before playing his first Blue-Eyes, destroying Yugi's monster and reducing his life points to 400. As Yugi worries about Kaiba's more serious duelling strategy, Kaiba warns him that he will soon know what fear really is.
Playing the Giant Soldier of Stone in defence mode, Yugi thinks that he might still have a chance to win the duel, but as Kaiba draws the Polymerisation card he decides that the time has come to unleash his most powerful monster. As Kaiba activates the Fusion of his Blue-Eyes, he reminds Yugi of how he struggled against three separate Blue-Eyes, warning him that he will have no chance against his new monster, the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon.
Realising that this is why Kaiba held off playing his Blue-Eyes, Yugi is impressed but unable to see a way to defeat his rival using the cards in his hand. Relishing every moment of the duel, Kaiba orders his dragon to attack, destroying Yugi's Stone Soldier.
As Yugi's friends cheer him on, Yugi refuses to give up, promising to fight on until the very end, a quality that Kaiba likes about him. However with no cards in his hand that can overcome Kaiba's dragon, everything rests on what could be Yugi's final card of the duel.
Episode 24 - Face Off: Part 3
With no monster in his hand capable of surviving an attack from Kaiba's Ultimate Blue-Eyes, Yugi draws what could be his final card, Kuriboh, and decides to play it. As the monster appears on the field, Kaiba is amused to see that Yugi has played the weakest monster in the whole of Duel Monsters as his final card. However as Kaiba unleashes the attack that will finish of Yugi's life points, Yugi reveals the Multiply card.
As Kaiba looks on bewildered, the Kuriboh begins to multiply until there are hundreds of them filling Yugi's side of the field. Yugi warns Kaiba that he know has many monsters to defend his life points, but Kaiba is not worried as he orders his Blue-Eyes to destroy the monsters. However as the neutron blast destroys some of the Kuriboh, the others continue to multiply.
Yugi congratulates Kaiba on having created the ultimate attack force, but he warns him that he has created the ultimate defence and that Kaiba must destroy all of the Kuriboh before he can damage Yugi's life points. To end his turn, Yugi decides to take a leaf out of Kaiba's book and create a new fusion. However rather than using two of his own monsters, Yugi reveals the Living Arrow, a card that allows him to fuse monsters with those belonging to his opponent.
As Yugi fuses his Mammoth graveyard with Kaiba's Blue-Eyes, the fusion does not work correctly because of the different types of the two monsters and Kaiba's dragon begins to decay, losing 1200 ATK points each turn, and with no way to reverse the fusion Kaiba can only watch as his Blue-Eyes grows weaker and weaker.
Téa is pleased to see her friend pull back from the brink of defeat and Bandit Keith, still watching from the tower, senses that Yugi won't let anything stop him from winning the duel. As Kaiba's turn begins, he once again tries to destroy the Kuriboh but his weakened Blue-Eyes is unable to eliminate all of them, and as Yugi's turn begins the Blue-Eyes' ATK falls to 2100.
Passing his turn back to Kaiba, Yugi knows that there is no way for Kaiba to stop the decaying or to eliminate the Kuriboh, and as another assault on Yugi's defence fails, the Blue-Eyes' ATK falls to just 900, making it weak enough for any of Yugi's monsters to finish it off.
As Kaiba tries to come to terms with the fact that he is going to lose, he is unable to stand the fact that he has failed Mokuba and broken his promise. Yugi plays the Celtic Guardian and destroys one of the Blue-Eyes' heads, reducing Kaiba's life points to 400, but as he does so Kaiba decides that there is only one way to win the duel.
Realising that he has no card that can win him the duel, Kaiba decides to use another tactic and backs himself up to the ledge of the annex wall. Yugi calls out for him to stop, but Kaiba warns him that is Yugi attacks his Blue-Eyes again, the shock of the attack may knock him off of the roof. Knowing that Yugi would never be willing to hurt anybody, Kaiba hopes to force his opponent to surrender and decides to make things more interesting by using Monster Reborn to resurrect the third Blue-Eyes head, free from the decaying effects of Yugi's Mammoth.
Kaiba warns Yugi that if he doesn't defeat him on the next turn, Kaiba will attack the Celtic Guardian with his Blue-Eyes and eliminate the last of Yugi's life points. As Yugi hesitates, not wanting to attack, Yami is determined to defeat Kaiba, sensing no other way to save Yugi's grandpa. However as Yami orders the attack, Téa calls out for Yugi to stop and Yugi takes control of his body, calling off the attack at the last moment.
As Yugi collapses to the ground, frightened at his confrontation with Yami, Kaiba attacks Yugi's Guardian and eliminates the last of his life points. As the terrified Yugi continues to cry, Kemo informs Pegasus that Kaiba has won the duel, a fact that greatly pleases Pegasus. As Yugi tries to explain that he almost couldn't control Yami, the others are unsure what he means and Bakura explains about the spirits of the Millennium Items. Worried that Yami may take over again and try to hurt his friends, Yugi decides to never duel again.
Kaiba taunts Yugi, claiming that he was too weak to win the duel, Téa tells him that while Yugi may have lost the duel, Kaiba has lost his heart, however Kaiba is not concerned with Téa's ranting as he has the only thing that he needs, enough star chips to gain access to the castle to duel Pegasus. As Yugi continues to cry, Kaiba heads off for the castle, ready to make Pegasus pay for everything that he has done to Mokuba.
Episode 25 - Shining Friendship
Still reeling from his defeat against Kaiba, Yugi is so scared of what Yami might make him do that he decides to never duel again. As his friends try to get him to talk to them, Joey offers Yugi his star chips so that he can still get into the castle to save his grandpa. But Yugi refuses to take them, determined to never duel again, and Joey begins to get mad at his friend.
As Joey begins to shout at Yugi, Mai turns up and is surprised to see that Yugi hasn't entered the castle, not knowing what has happened to him. As she learns that Yugi finally lost a duel, she is slightly shocked but is willing to help him out. Meanwhile, inside Pegasus's castle, Kaiba is prepared to take Pegasus down, not knowing that his opponent is looking forward to the duel, pleased with Kaiba's previous success.
Back at the castle gate Mai tells Yugi to stop crying, reminding him that if everybody gave up when they lost, she'd have been gone a long time ago. In an attempt to cheer Yugi up, Mai offers him the star chips that she owed him from his duel against Panik and while Joey thinks that she is offering six of her ten star chips, she is pleased to be able to show the group that she already has ten stars and that these are spares.
Yugi is still unresponsive and Mai begins to get mad at him, changing her mind about giving him the chips. However as Mai calls Yugi a chicken for giving up after just one defeat, Téa challenges Mai to a duel for the star chips, and although Mai thinks her opponent will have no chance of winning she accepts the challenge.
As the duel begins, Téa plays the Petit Angel, a cute monster that the guys think has no chance of winning in battle, and as Mai plays Harpy Lady, plus one card face down, she proves them right as she attacks, destroying Téa's angel and reducing her life points to 1300. Although Téa is worried to have taken such a big hit in the first round, she refuses to give up and plays Fairie's Gift.
Noticing that she has the Wobaku trap in her hand, Téa decides to play that face down, however she can't remember what it does so she decides to hold of using it for the moment. However as Téa attacks Mai's Harpy with her stronger monster, Mai reveals the Rose Whip card, increasing the ATK of her Harpy by 300 points. As the two monsters collide, Téa's Fairy is destroyed, reducing her life points to 1100.
As Mai tells Téa to go back to cheerleading, Bakura, watching from the sideline, is impressed with Mai's strategy. But even with the odds stacked against her, Téa refuses to give up, even though Yugi doesn't seem to care about what is happening in the duel. Mai draws her next card and is pleased to see that it's the Harpy's Feather Duster and decides to play it face down, upsetting Téa who begins to worry what the card could be. However as Téa draws Shining Friendship, the name reminds her of the strength and support of her friends and she hopes that the card could be as strong as her friendship with the guys.
Playing Shining Friendship, Téa leaves herself open to an attack from Mai's Harpy, but just before the Harpy attacks, Téa remembers what Wobaku does and activates it, reducing the Harpy's ATK to 0 until the end of the turn. As Mai looks on, impressed that Téa used such a powerful card, Téa admits that even though she is scared she will keep on fighting and face her fears, a comment that rings true to Yugi who is unable to face his own fears.
As Téa plays the Magician of Faith in defence mode, she uses the Silver Bow and Arrow to increase the ATK of Shining Friendship. However as Mai powers up her Harpy with the Cyber Shield, she uses De-Spell to destroy Téa's power up. As Mai's Harpy destroys the Magician of Faith, Mai has to remind Téa that the monster's destruction means that she can retrieve one magic card from her graveyard. As Mai taunts Téa, claiming that she has no chance to win if she doesn't know the rules of the game, she tells Téa that she may as well give up as she can't fight all of Yugi's battles for him.
However as Mai continues to taunt Téa, Yugi begins to come to, deciding not to give up on duelling just because he is scared of what might happen. With Yugi now supporting Téa, her confidence grows again as she begins to think through a combo. Replaying the Silver Bow and Arrow, Téa powers up her monster further by using the Elf's Light card, however it is still not strong enough to defeat Mai's Harpy. But as Mai attacks, Téa reveals her own De-Spell card, destroying Mai's Cyber Shield and making her Harpy weaker than Téa's monster.
As the two monsters collide, Mai's Harpy is destroyed, reducing her life points to 1600, but as Téa celebrates the win, Mai knows that she could have won the clash by activating her Feather Duster. However instead of playing on, Mai surrenders, handing Téa the star chips, but Yugi also senses that Mai's card could have won her the duel.
Téa can't believe that she won but is eager to give Yugi the star chips. However as Yugi thanks his friend for her support, he tries to ask Mai about the card she had face down, but she fobs him off, claiming that some cards just aren't worth playing. Yugi thanks both Téa and Mai for their support, and with Yugi back on track to enter the castle the group heads off to find Pegasus and the end of the tournament
Episode 26 - Champion V Creator: Part 1
With ten star chips each, Yugi, Joey, Mai and the others head back to Pegasus's castle ready for their chance to duel him. As the three submit their star chips to enter, the guard stops Tristan, Bakura and Téa as they don't even have duelling gloves. But determined to get in, Mai flirts with the guard and they all sneak in, shutting the guard outside. Inside the castle they find Bandit Keith who is also waiting for his duel with Pegasus. He tells them that they'll have to wait for the current duel to end first, a duel between Kaiba and Pegasus.
As the gang looks down, they see Kaiba awaiting Pegasus's arrival so that they can duel. Pegasus enters the room and begins to taunt Kaiba, but he is unfazed. He is here to rescue his brother and nothing else matters. Pegasus points out to Kaiba that they have an audience and Kaiba spots Yugi and the gang. Kaiba is shocked but not surprised to see that Yugi has managed to regain the star chips he needed and Pegasus is also pleased that Yugi has passed all the 'tests' he has been set.
Kaiba challenges Pegasus to use the duelling disc system, but Pegasus plays with it, arguing that it wouldn't be fair as he doesn't even know how to use it. He agrees to duel with the system, but only if Kaiba lets another player play the cards in Pegasus's place. Kaiba is confused but things become clear as two guards drag in Mokuba. Pegasus tells Kaiba that Mokuba (still missing his soul) will duel in his place.
The others are shocked to learn that Kaiba is not just fighting to rescue his brother, but that Mokuba's is at stake. Yugi now realises why Kaiba was so desperate to win the duel they fought on the castle roof. Pegasus warns Kaiba that if he loses this battle, his soul will also become trapped inside a card forever. Kaiba refuses to duel against Mokuba and agrees to use the traditional duelling simulator.
As the room changes and an arena descends, Yugi warns Kaiba that he must trust in the Heart of the Cards and that he should be careful of the Millennium Eye, but Kaiba ignores him. Pegasus begins his turn by playing two cards, a monster in defence mode and a second card, both face down. On Kaiba's turn, he has a Blue Eyes White Dragon in his starting hand but is uneasy about playing it yet. Instead he plays a card face down but also plays the Rude Kaiser in attack mode and destroys Pegasus's monster.
Not concerned by the attack, Pegasus begins to taunt Kaiba as he plays the Parrot Dragon. But as Pegasus attacks, Kaiba activates the Mesmeric Control, reducing its attack power by 800. Once again unfazed, Pegasus continues to toy with Kaiba, just as he did when duelling Yugi. Kaiba begins to wonder whether Pegasus has known what he is doing before he does it.
Determined to crush Pegasus, Kaiba decides to play his first Blue Eyes, but as he does so Pegasus interrupts to activate his magic card, Prophecy. Like a guessing game, if Pegasus can guess if the card's attack power is above or below 2000, it will become Pegasus's. Not only guessing the card's attack power, Pegasus also announces what the card is, shocking Kaiba who does not understand the power of the Millennium Eye.
He then decides to use the Millennium Eye to scout out Kaiba's hand. Learning that Kaiba has both Crush and Saagi in his hand, Kaiba plays a card face down, ready to counteract the combo that shut down Yugi's attack force during Kaiba's last duel. As Kaiba plays the combo, Pegasus's Negative Energy card increases the Dark Clown's attack points meaning it is too strong to host the virus. He then plays the Dark Rabbit which, powered up by the Negative Energy, destroys the Dark Clown and halves Kaiba's life points in one attack.
With Kaiba's life points down to 1000 and Pegasus sitting at an untouched 2000, does the Duel Monsters champion have any chance of defeating the game's creator, especially with the Millennium Eye helping his opponent?
Episode 27 - Champion V Creator: Part 2
As Kaiba continues his duel with Pegasus, Yugi tells the others about the power of Pegasus's Millennium Eye and how it allows Pegasus to see the cards Kaiba is holding. The others doubt what Yugi is saying, but Joey seems to think that if the Millennium Eye really has such powers there will be no way for Kaiba to win. Yugi disagrees with this, reminding Joey that Kaiba is the champion of the game and hopefully has a reserve plan to help him win from behind.
Meanwhile, Kaiba is also beginning to realise the power of the Millennium Eye, but still believes that he can win by playing the cards in his hand. Playing a second monster in defence mode to aid his Rude Kaiser, the champion can do little but wait for Pegasus to make his move.
As Pegasus begins his turn, rather than playing a card he decides to take a time out to reminisce about his favourite cartoon show, "Funny Bunny". As Pegasus recalls the mishaps of the cartoon bunny, Kaiba calls for him to stop talking and start playing, so Pegasus does just that, playing his next card, the Toonworld.
With its new haven inside the covers of the cartoon world, Pegasus's Dark Rabbit is protected from all of Kaiba's attacks but can still emerge to attack. Crushing Kaiba's Battle Ox, the rabbit then retreats back inside the book until Pegasus's next turn. Kaiba, unable to attack the Dark Rabbit, plays one card face down and then ends his turn.
Not content with the fortress-like protection of the Toonworld, Pegasus decides to show off the card's power further by playing the card that he took from Kaiba turns before. But as he plays the Blue Eyes White Dragon, it merges with the habitat of Toonworld and emerges as a Blue Eyes Toon Dragon, a cartoon monster with the power of its normal counterpart. The Dragon attacks the Rude Kaiser, destroying Kaiba's last defensive monster.
Shocked but not yet beaten, Kaiba begins to realise that Pegasus can see the cards in his hand and so decides to discard his current hand, playing instead the top card from his deck. Trusting in the heart of the cards, his faith is rewarded as he draws a second Blue Eyes White Dragon. But as Kaiba attacks the Toon Dragon, another of the Toonworld's rules becomes apparent as the Toon dodges the attack. Pegasus informs Kaiba that like "Funny Bunny" in the TV show, his Toon Monsters cannot be damaged by any attack.
From the sidelines, the gang questions the legality of playing with the Toonworld card. Yugi admits that the Toonworld card was never released on the open market because it was too powerful and that Pegasus's version must be the only one. Meanwhile it is Pegasus's turn again, but with Kaiba playing "blind", Pegasus turns his tactics to seeing into Kaiba's mind and his knowledge of his deck.
Adding yet another layer to the Toonworld, Pegasus plays the Shine Palace, a card that energises all Toon Monsters with its radiant light. The powered-up Toon Dragon attacks, but is blocked by Kaiba's Negate Energy magic card. As what could be his last turn begins, Kaiba must place all of his trust into the cards. Playing the Shadow Spell, he successfully traps the Blue Eyes Toon Dragon before destroying it with the original Blue Eyes, reducing Pegasus's life points to 1200.
Furious that Kaiba has destroyed one of his precious toons, Pegasus retaliates by playing the Dragon Capture Jar. Absorbing the second Blue Eyes inside, the jar's defence points rise to that of the Blue Eyes. Kaiba is unwilling to relent and plays a monster in defence, but on Pegasus's turn he plays the Dragon Piper. As the Piper begins to draw the Blue Eyes, trapped in the Dragon Capture Jar, under Pegasus's control, Kaiba attacks, hoping to shut down the Piper. But as the Sword Stalker prepares to strike, Pegasus reveals his Doppelganger card and uses it to clone Kaiba's Crush card. Infecting the Dragon Piper with the virus, Kaiba's attack leaves his entire deck infected.
With every monster except for one infected by the virus, Kaiba has no choice to revive Saagi, the Dark Clown with the Reborn the Monster card. But as Pegasus prepares for his final attack, Kaiba realises that it is hopeless and that he is about to lose. As the Dark Clown is destroyed, Kaiba loses the last monster not infected by the virus and has to forfeit the match.
As Pegasus gloats and taunts Kaiba for losing the only chance to save his brother, he reminds Kaiba that his soul now belongs to Pegasus. Drawing a blank card, Pegasus uses the Millennium Eye to seal Kaiba's soul within the shadow realm inside the card. Shocked and distraught at Kaiba's defeat, Yami Yugi threatens Pegasus, warning him that soon the duel between the two of them will begin and with it will come Pegasus's final defeat.
Intrigued by the power of the Millennium Puzzle, Pegasus reminds Yugi Yama that in order to earn the right to fight him, he must first defeat the other finalists in the last rounds of the tournament. But will Yugi be able to win the right to fight Pegasus when he must go up against his friends, Joey and Mai?
Episode 28 - The Night Before
After witnessing Kaiba's defeat at the hands (and Millennium Eye) of Pegasus, the gang (and Bandit Keith) retire to a banquet in the dining hall. While eating, the tournament co-ordinator arrives to congratulate the four duellists on reaching the final playoffs, and reminds them that they must present the playoff cards in order to qualify for the final rounds.
All four look blankly back at him until he explains that the cards in question are the two that were sent out with the tournament invitations: Glory of the King's Hand and Glory of the King's Opposite Hand. Each card will grant the player access to the final stage, but each brings with it a different prize. Glory of the King's Hand allows the duellist to claim the $3,000,00 prize while Glory of the King's Opposite Hand grants the duellist the right to duel Pegasus for the championship title.
Joey is immediately concerned as he never received an invitation in the first place, bumming his initial star chip off of Yugi. Bandit Keith is also lacking the cards for some reason, meaning that he will need to steal one in order to qualify. As the soup is laid out for the duellists, they each discover an "eye" inside the bowl. Inside the eye is a randomly distributed letter that will allocate them their duelling rival in the first round of the playoffs.
In the first round of the playoffs, Yugi (A) will face Mai (B) while Joey (D) is up against Bandit Keith (C). Joey is excited by this, ready to seek revenge on Bandit Keith for trapping him and the others inside the cave. Meanwhile Yugi and Mai seem to be looking forward to duelling, but will Mai be able to defeat Yugi when she lost to Joey?
As the duellists prepare to retire to bed for the night, Joey confesses to Yugi that he might as well give up now because he doesn't have either of the playoff cards. But Yugi kindly offers Joey his Glory of the King's Hand card so that they both have a chance of winning the tournament. Bandit Keith is furious at this, because it means that he is the only duellist left without a playoff card.
That evening all four duellists prepare in different ways. Joey crashes out into a deep sleep dreaming about gigantic doughnuts?! while Yugi is looking forward to seeing his Grandpa again once he defeats Pegasus. Mai is preparing to fine tune her deck ready for her duel against Yugi while Bandit Keith is lying in wait to steal a playoff card from one of the other duellists.
Téa and the guys are also restless, but for a different reason. Tristan is sure that Pegasus cheated in his duel against Kaiba and is determined to find out how. The three return to the duelling arena and after a long time of searching they discover a shaft of moonlight shining into the arena onto Kaiba's duelling platform. After closer inspection they discover a hole that lines up where Kaiba's cards would have been with a tower on the other side of the castle.
Meanwhile Yugi hears his Grandpa calling out to him, warning him to beware of Pegasus. As the duellist heads off to find the source of his Grandpa's voice, the three continue their quest to find the origin of Pegasus's cheating. They find a grappling hook and some rope, and Tristan suggests that they climb to the tower to avoid being spotted. Back in her bedroom, Mai is preparing her deck in order to increase her chances of defeating Yugi, but as he has watched two of her matches, she will need to think up new strategies if she wants any hope of winning against him.
Following the voice he can hear, Yugi discovers the card with his Grandpa's soul. The card warns him that Pegasus is stronger than anybody could imagine and that he is growing stronger with every new soul he absorbs. He warns Yugi that Pegasus is after his Millennium puzzle because it will give him untold strength and that in order to defeat him, Yugi must harness the true power of his Millennium Item. If he does not, Pegasus will be able to unleash Armageddon on the world.
As the three arrive in the tower, Bakura discovers a large painting masked by the shadows. As they search for a light switch, the room mysteriously illuminates, revealing the identity of the painting's subject. The woman in the red dress is not somebody the three have met, but it is identical to a painting in the dining hall, so Téa assumes that the woman must be special to Pegasus. But as they debate who she is, Pegasus arrives and begins to taunt the three for being where they shouldn't be. Tristan warns Pegasus that they know he cheated against Kaiba, but he denies the fact and punishes the three for breaking into his tower by trapping them inside the Millennium Eye.
As the room dissolves around them, the three find themselves in an Egyptian tomb, witnessing some kind of ritual. Téa notices the picture of the woman is in this room as well, but they still have no idea as to who she could be. As they watch the ritual, they begin to realise that it is an ancient Shadow Game, and as the duel ends the winner unmasks to reveal himself as Pegasus.
Back in the real world, Yugi wakes up in the middle of his Grandpa's pep talk, but has the event been nothing more than a dream?
In the Shadow Realm, Pegasus tells the three that the loser of the duel has been cast into the Shadow Realm and that with each new soul he is growing stronger. He tells them that even though the Millennium Eye gives him great powers, he craves the power to control life and death. But as he prepares to trap the three within the Shadow Realm forever, Bakura's Millennium Ring is activated, reviving the dark soul inside of him.
Yami Bakura warns Pegasus that he will never wield all of the Millennium Items. He then returns the friends to the real world, erasing their memories of the events so that they believe that it was nothing more than a dream. Yami Bakura begins to crave Pegasus's Millennium Eye in order to give him more power.
Meanwhile Bandit Keith sneaks into Joey's room and steals the Glory of the King's Hand card and Mai finishes preparing her deck ready to duel against Yugi. Yugi is meanwhile considering what his Grandpa said to him and how he will be able to unlock the power of his Millennium Puzzle. But little does he realise the power struggle that could ensue between Pegasus and Bakura for the power of the three Millennium Items if he unlocks the Puzzle's true powers.
Episode 29 - Duel Identity: Part 1
After a stressful night, Yugi holds doubts as to whether he is doing the right thing by continuing to duel, still fearing the presence inside his Millennium Puzzle. But with three souls at stake, he has no choice but to carry on duelling. Fearing what the Puzzle could make him do, he promises to himself that he will do everything he can to keep it under control even though his Grandpa has told him that he should make full use of its powers.
His friends arrive, ready for the tournament, and Yugi's Millennium Puzzle transforms him. The friends head off to the arena, but Tristan, Téa and Bakura have to watch from the balcony as only the finalists are allowed onto the Arena floor. Yugi and Joey make their way to the waiting hall where they meet their rivals. Mai and Yugi both seem eager to duel, but Joey seems more eager to mock Bandit Keith who had to steal his star chips. Bandit Keith doesn't seem at all concerned because he knows that Joey no longer has the qualifying card that Yugi gave him, because Keith stole it during the events of the previous evening.
The doors to the arena open and all four enter the main arena floor. As the four enter, they notice Pegasus has taken position on his throne in order to oversee the duels. He congratulates the four on winning through to the final round and reminds them that only one will walk away with the prizes. Pegasus explains that the real prize is not the money but the title of World Champion that can be earned if the winner of the tournament can defeat Pegasus in a duel.
As Pegasus finishes talking, the play-off board descends as the first duel is announced:
Mai Valentine v Yugi Moto As the two approach their duelling platforms, Yugi is determined to keep the spirit inside his puzzle under control in case it tries to hurt Mai like it did against Kaiba. Each duellist is asked to reveal which qualifying card they wish to declare. Mai shows the Glory of the King's Hand (for the prize money) while Yugi shows the Glory of the King's Other Hand (for the duel against Pegasus). As the duel prepares to begin, Joey appears up at the balcony with his friends in order to get a better view to cheer Yugi on.
Both duellists seem to have a lot on their minds. Yugi is afraid that he can't duel at his best while trying to control the spirit of his Millennium Puzzle while Mai is reminiscing about how she has learnt through Yugi that duelling rivals can also be great friends, reminding herself that if it wasn't for Yugi she would no longer be in the tournament. She is determined to play an honourable duel, not using her old "psychic" tricks, but is not willing to give Yugi an easy game. If she doesn't fight at her best, she will never be able to be truly proud of the match if she wins.
Mai begins the duel with her classic opener, Harpy Lady. Nobody is surprised by the duel, but Yugi's friends seem concerned that he looks unsettled. Taya worries that Yugi may not be able to win while still affected by his defeat against Kaiba. However Joey is more confident that his friend can win because after seeing Mai duel so many times, Yugi must know all of her strategies. To end her turn, Mai plays one other card face down.
Yugi, determined to win without the help of the spirit of his Puzzle, decides to win quickly and so plays Gaia, the Fierce Knight. But as he attacks, Mai's trap card is activated, generating a Mirror Wall in front of the Harpy. Not only does the wall block the attack, but also it counters it with one of equal strength, halving the Gaia's attack points.
Powering up her Harpy Lady with the Cyber Shield, Mai attacks Yugi's Fierce Knight, crushing it and cutting his life points down to 1350. Mai taunts Yugi, claiming that he must be holding back to have fallen for the trap. Yugi admits to himself that Mai is right, but now that her Mirror Wall is out of the way he is able to attack the Harpy safely. He plays one card face down and then attacks with the Summon Skull, but as the Skull attacks, the Mirror Wall appears again. Shocked, Yugi realises that this trap is a permanent trap, an exception to the usual one-time traps he has encountered before.
While Joey wonders why Yugi is just playing on the attack rather than using strategy, Yugi tries to resist the spirit's help. Mai demands that Yugi shapes up and starts playing properly, rather than embarrassing himself with his lame frontal assault. For her, the purpose of duelling is defeating worthy opponents, not creaming unworthy players like Yugi. She tells Yugi to face up to the fact that he still isn't concentrating right after his defeat against Kaiba and that he should get over it. If he doesn't shake up soon, she'll wipe him out easily.
As Yugi tries to find a way to explain that it isn't Kaiba that frightened him but the spirit inside himself, Pegasus gloats to himself that Yugi will never be able to save his Grandpa if he isn't willing to use his Millennium Puzzle's true powers. Mai complains that Yugi is boring her and he tells her that he isn't going to let her win. But if he continues to play so poorly, there's no way Mai can lose. Joey warns Yugi to ignore Mai trying to psyche him out, but Téa thinks Joey is wrong. Mai is trying to restore Yugi's confidence, like she did before her duel with Téa.
Yugi claims that he is giving everything he has got, but Mai is doubtful. He seems distracted and, as Mai begins her turn, she realises that Yugi played a trap card to try and shut down her Harpy. Playing Harpy's Feather Duster, she wipes the Spell Binding Circle from the field, warning Yugi that he should try harder than this. Yugi decides to alter his strategy and switches his Summon Skull to defence mode, playing the Feral Imp to join it.
But Mai powers her Harpy again with the Rose Whip, shocking Yugi as her monster's attack power increases yet again. Unsure whether he can win on his own, Yugi still resists the spirit's help, frightened of what it might do to Mai. The Harpy attacks, crushing Yugi's Feral Imp and Joey warns Yugi that Mai is going to try and multiply her Harpy soon. But even knowing her strategy Yugi is unable to see a way to turn the duel around.
Mai continues her turn by playing the Harpy's Pet Dragon, whose attack points increase if it is near a Harpy Lady. Attacking, the dragon easily destroys the Summon Skull. Mai warns Yugi that he needs to start focusing on the duel, but then diverts his attention from the duel at hand by asking why he duels. He tells her that he is duelling for his Grandpa, but also for Kaiba and Mokuba.
Drawing his Dark Magician, Yugi plays it in defence mode along with one other card face down. Hoping to defeat Mai's Mirror Wall with his Mirror Force, Yugi is shocked when Mai predicts his play. Using the Shadow of Eyes card on her Harpy Lady, Mai is able to draw Yugi's Dark Magician into switching into attack mode and then, after dusting away the Mirror Force, attacking the Harpy Lady. Once again the Mirror Wall kicks into action, halving the Dark Magician's attack points.
Mai finishes her turn by attacking again with her Harpy's Pet Dragon. With Yugi's life points down to 300 and Mai still at full health, is there any way he can turn the duel around without accepting the help of the spirit of the Puzzle?
Episode 30 - Duel Identity: Part 2
As the first playoff duel rages, Yugi has been reduced to 300 life points while Mai's life points remain at an untouched 2000. With the Shadow of Eyes card luring Yugis monsters into attack mode and the Mirror Wall then reducing their attack points, Yugi seems helpless against the power of Mai's Harpy / Dragon team. Not only that, but he is struggling to resist the spirit of his Millennium Puzzle, fearing what it might do. But if he doesn't embrace the spirit, he may risk losing the only chance he has of rescuing his Grandpa.
Mai's new strategy seems flawless and she owes it to Joey for teaching her the most important lesson of her life. When he defeated her in his first ever tournament duel, he forced her to look at herself in a new way, confronting her fears of her abilities and her trust in herself. Mai tells Joey that her defeat against him taught her more about duelling than any of her victories and forced her to face up to her fears. But now Yugi has the chance to do the same and he is bottling up hi s fears, scared of what might happen.
As Yugi considers what Mai has said, the spirit of the Puzzle explains that he never meant to hurt Kaiba, but was just trying to save Yugi's Grandpa. He promises to work together with Yugi, not doing what he alone sees best again. Yugi agrees and the two begin working together once more.
Playing Brain Control, Yugi takes control of Mai's Pet Dragon, but even under his control it still refuses to attack its master. Instead, Yugi plays one card face own and then plays the Catapult Turtle. Loading the Dragon onto the Turtle's back, Yugi fires it at Mai's Harpy Lady, destroying her Mirror Wall and reducing her life points to 850 in one attack. With Yugi's inner spirit working with him once more, Mai will have to play better than ever in order to win. Fearing Yugi's trap card, she plays the Elegant Egotist, triplicating her Harpy Lady to give a trio of the powerful monsters and then ends her turn.
As Yugi's turn begins, he tells Mai that she should have attacked him on her turn. She argues that she isn't that foolish, but as Yugi turns over the card Mai realises that he was bluffing. Revealing the Monster Recovery card, Yugi tells Mai that an attack on her turn would have won her the match. Instead, he plays the Monster Recovery card to return all his monsters to his deck and then draw a new hand.
But even with his new hand, he still has nothing strong enough to defeat the Mai's three Harpies. Instead he plays the one card that he can, the Mystical Elf, in defence mode. As a female monster, it is unaffected by the Shadow of Eyes and so cannot be lured into attacking. Mai is shocked, having forgotten the flaw in the Shadow of Eyes, but is unfazed as she plays Monster Reborn to revive her Harpy's Pet Dragon, now even stronger at 2900 attack points because of the three Harpies. Attacking the Mystical Elf with her three Harpies, Mai destroys Yugi's only possible defence card.
With only one card left to save the duel, Yugi begins to lose faith in himself. But the strength of Yugi and his spirit, combined with the heart of the cards, prevails as Yugi draws the Swords of Revealing Light, shutting down Mai's monsters for three turns. Yugi's spirit tells him that there is only one way they can win, and that is through the Black Lustre Ritual. But the Ritual is risky and three turns may not be long enough to draw all the necessary cards. Even so, Yugi plays the first component of the ritual, the puny Karebo.
Mai is amazed by Yugi's guts at playing such a weak monster, but he warns her no t to mock the creature as it is the start of her demise. Mai draws one card and then ends her turn, but as Yugi draws his next card he is still missing the final component needed for the Black Lustre Ritual. However he is able to play the second part and using his own Monster Reborn card revives Gaia, the Fierce Knight. But with only two turns to go, can he draw the final card to activate the Ritual. \par \par As Mai's turn begins, Pegasus realises Yugi's strategy and is astounded by his foolishness. As Mai draws a second Harpy Lady card, she gloats to herself that Yugi will be crushed on her next turn when she attacks with four Harpies and the harpy's pet Dragon at a powered-up 3200 attack points. As she ends her turn, the Swords fade away, releasing their control over Mai's monsters.
As he prepares to draw the deciding card of the duel, Yugi begins to doubt whether it is fair to risk the lives of so many of Yugi's friends on the draw of one card. But with the support of all his friends, the power of the two Yugis i s stronger than ever, shocking Pegasus who has never felt such power. As he draws the final card, Yugi reveals the Black Lustre Ritual card. Activating the card, the ritual beings.
As both of his monsters are sacrificed, their powers of light and darkness are combined, opening the Gates of Chaos in order to allow the Black Lustre Soldier to emerge. With a powerful attack, the Soldier destroys the Pet Dragon and reduces Mai's life points to 750. Everyone is shocked, especially Mai whose spirit is broken by the crushing defeat of her Dragon. Unable to revive it again, her strategy has fallen to pieces and she cannot see any way to win. Laying her hand over her deck, she concedes the match to Yugi, unable to face seeing her Harpies destroyed on Yugi's next turn.
As Mai turns to leave, Yugi thanks her for teaching him to confront his fears and weaknesses. Mai admits that she also has a lot to learn, both about duelling and herself, but warns Yugi that they will meet again and next time she may not be so easy to defeat. Even so, Yugi must still defeat the winner of the next duel in order to earn the right to duel Pegasus and save his Grandpa. But will he be strong enough to defeat his opponent if he is pitted against his closest friend?
Episode 31 - Keith's Machination: Part 1
After defeating Mai in the first duel, Yugi advances to the second stage of the tournament as Pegasus applauds the amazing show. However the next first round match is still to be played, Joey against Bandit Keith. Joey is startled by the lack of time to prepare while Bandit Keith, the inter-continental champion, seems unnaturally calm. As Joey approaches the arena, he meets Yugi who is just leaving. Joey reminds him that if he wins this match, the two friends will be head-to-head against each other in the playoff finals. Joey seems uneasy about this, but Yugi promises that as long as they both duel well it will be an honourable duel and they will still be friends.
As Joey enters the arena, he finds Bandit Keith relaxing on a sofa. As the two duellists are asked to show their verification cards, Keith reveals Glory of the King's Hand and is accepted for the duel. But as Joey prepares to show his card, he is unable to find it because, unknown to him, Keith stole it during the previous evening. After searching his pockets with no success, Joey is granted a 5-minute delay until 11:00 in order to find the card. If he is unable to find the card during that time he will be disqualified and Bandit Keith will automatically advance.
As Joey heads back to his room, Keith lays back down to relax, confident that Joey isn't going to find the card. With three minutes to go, Joey is still unable to find his card and Keith is still relaxing, until the tournament organiser tells him that unless he is on the duelling platform at 11:00, he will also be disqualified. Complaining about being disturbed, Keith gets up and enters the duelling platform. Yugi considers offering Joey his card, but without it Yugi would be unable to duel Pegasus for his Grandpa's soul.
With one minute to go, Keith is so confident that Joey is not going to return with the card that he tells Joey's friends that Joey probably lost the card on purpose because he was scared to duel Keith after the incident in the cave. However Yugi disagrees with Keith, arguing that Joey would never back away from a duel, even if he didn't think he could win.
Meanwhile Joey has given up the search for his card and, having lost his only chance to help his sister, begins to cry. Mai arrives and tells him to stop complaining, lending him her hankie to dry his eyes with. As she goes to turn away, Mai tells Joey that he is always surprising her, explaining that she knows about his sister. Using the hankie, Joey notices Mai's Glory of the King's Hand is inside it. He thanks her and she tells him that she didn't need it anyway, having lost her duel. Joey asks her if they are finally friends, but she ignores him, telling him to take Bandit Keith down. But as Joey heads off, she admits to herself that maybe the two of them are friends after all.
As Joey makes his entrance into the arena, Keith mocks him, confident that he was unable to find the card. But when Joey reveals the card, Keith is equally shocked, not realising that Joey could have gotten the card from Mai. With both duellists ready and verified, the duel begins. Keith warns Joey that as the inter-continental champion he will easily win the match and that it barely qualifies as a warm-up match for his duel against Pegasus. However Joey argues that the title isn't even that impressive and that he could find a better title inside a cereal packet.
For his first turn, Keith plays a monster card face-down in defence mode and when Joey's turn begins he does the same. However as Keith begins his second turn, he switches the monster into attack mode, revealing it as the Pendulum Machine, the first mechanical monster that either Joey or Yugi has ever faced. The Pendulum Machine attacks Joey's monster, destroying it, but Joey doesn't seem too concerned. Now that Keith's monster has been revealed, he knows its attack power and just has to play a stronger monster to defeat it. However as Joey plays Guiltia the Knight, Yugi is not so sure about the ease of the defeat, knowing that machines have some kind of special power.
As Joey's Knight attacks, the blast, which should have destroyed the machine, is deflected away. A shocked Joey is informed by Bandit Keith that all of his machines are resistant to both magic cards and magical attacks. Playing the Launcher Spider, another machine, Joey realises that Keith's deck is most likely full of machines, all impervious to Joey's magical attacks. As the Spider attacks, it wipes out Joey's Knight and reduces his life points to 1650.
For his next turn, Joey plays two cards; one face-down and a monster face-down in defence mode. This angers Keith who is unable to attack Joey's life points if he keeps playing monsters in defence. Playing one card face-down, Keith prepares to play a monster in defence, but accidentally drops it face up revealing, just for a second, what it looks like. Joey is pleased by this mistake, as the card Keith revealed was not a machine but a shadow monster called Zoa. However as Joey prepares to attack with his Flame Swordsman, powered up with the Salamandra card, Yugi realises that Keith meant to drop the card.
Zoa's attack points are stronger than its defence points, so it made no sense playing it in defence unless it was intended as a trap. As Joey attacks, Keith activates his Magic Metal Force card, transforming Zoa into Metal Zoa, a monster with metal armour able to deflect attacks back at where they came from. Destroying the Flame Swordsman with its own attack, Joey's life points drop to 1150.
Not content with destroying Joey's Swordsman, Keith uses Stop Defence to reveal Joey's other monster on the field, the Axe Raider. Having forced the Axe Raider into attack mode, Keith attacks it with Metal Zoa but is caught in Joey's Chasm of Spikes trap card, reducing Keith's life points to 1250. Yugi praises Joey's use of traps to stop the machines and Joey becomes cocky. Playing one card face-down, he warns Keith that it's a trap. Then he switches the Axe Raider back into defence mode and plays Garouzeis in attack mode. Attacking the Pendulum Machine, Garouzeis destroys it and reduces Keith's life points to 1200.
Not fooled by Joey's poor attempt at a bluff, Keith attacks with his Launcher Spider but is snared by the Kunai Whip Chain. Shocked that Joey was not bluffing, the Spider is destroyed and Keith's life points fall to 1100. However as Joey taunts Keith, the inter-continental champion warns him that he hasn't yet played the strongest machines in his deck and warns Joey that when he runs out of traps the real fun will begin.
Episode 32 - Keith's Machination: Part 2
With Joey on 1150 life points and Bandit Keith on 1100, the second playoff duel is proving to be much even than the previous. At such close levels, the next few turns could make all the difference for either player. Pegasus, surprised by the success of an amateur like Joey, decides to do some investigating in order to discover what motivates each player.
Using his Millennium Eye, he realises that both have very different motives for duelling. Keith is driven by bitterness and a desire to defeat Pegasus after the humiliation he faced when they last duelled, while Joey is duelling in order to earn the money to save his sister's eyesight. It's practically a battle of good against evil.
Keith tells Joey that he is little more than a speed bump on his way to duelling Pegasus and that he will beat both Joey and Yugi easily. But Joey denies that Keith will even beat him and warns the inter-continental champion that even if he did defeat Joey, Yugi would cream him. At this point Keith tires of arguing and begins to duel again.
Playing one card face-down, Keith then lays the Barrel Dragon in attack mode. Unfortunately for Joey, this triple-cannon machine is able to take three attacks and, using two of them, Keith destroys both of Joey's monsters, reducing his life points to 850. Shocked but not defeated, Joey counters with the combo that helped him win in the past. Playing both the Time Wizard and Baby Dragon, he spins the Time Roulette. As the spin slows, it lands on a Time Machine symbol and the arena spins forward in time, corroding Keith's Barrel Dragon and evolving Joey's Baby Dragon.
Attacking with his Thousand Dragon, Joey thinks he has destroyed Keith's machine until he notices the trap card Keith played. Activating the Time Machine card, Keith is able to retrieve one monster as it was on the previous turn. Reviving his healthy Barrel Dragon he attacks and destroys Joey's Thousand Dragon, reducing his life points to 650. Keith warns Joey that he knows every card in his deck from the duel with Bones and that he had predicted the Time Wizard combo.
Disheartened at the shocking counter, Joey plays a monster in defence and ends his turn. Keith plays a second machine, the Slot Machine, and then attacks with his Barrel Dragon, destroying Joey's monster. As Joey examines his hand, he realises that not even his Red Eyes Black Dragon is strong enough to defeat both machines, but plays it anyway, alongside one other face-down card. As Keith attacks the Red Eyes, Joey reveals his Copycat card.
Copying Keith's Magic Metal Force, Joey transforms his normal Red Eyes into the Red Eyes Black Metal Dragon. The monster not only withstands the attack but also deflects it, reducing Keith's life points to 900. Keith argues that it was an amateur move, but Joey asks how an amateur was able to outwit the inter-continental champion.
Playing one card face-down, Keith switches his Slot machine to defence mode and ends his turn. Joey also plays a card face-down and then attacks with his Red Eyes. But as the attack is called, Keith reveals his Seven-Completed card, a card designed to power up the Slot Machine. As the middle reel changes from a question mark to a seven, Keith explains that the Seven-Completed cards can power up either the attack points or the defence points of his machine.
As Joey's attack is deflected and his life points fall to 450, Keith warns that he has two more of the cards in his deck. Joey isn't too concerned by this, hoping that Keith will be unable to draw all three before he can find a way to win. But as Keith draws a card from his deck, he also withdraws a second Seven-Completed from under his wristband. While Joey doesn't notice this, Pegasus senses the trick but does nothing.
Playing the second Seven card on the Slot Machine's attack points, Keith also lays down the Blast Sphere, attaching it to Joey's Dragon. As his turn ends, Keith's Blast Sphere self-destructs, but Joey counters with the magic card Dragon Nails, which raises his Red Eyes' attack points high enough as to withstand the attack. Keith's life points are reduced by the blast, taking him down to 400 points.
Withdrawing the final Seven card from his wristband, Keith plays it on his Slot Machine's attack points creating a stalemate situation, with both monsters at the same attack strength. As Joey contemplates his move, he considers the Sword and Shield card, but it would only help Keith's machines and not his Red Eyes. Instead he plays one card face-down and ends his turn.
For Keith's next move, he plays the Pillager to take one of Joey's cards. Choosing the Sword and Shield card, he switches that attack and defence points of each monster on the field, meaning his Machine is stronger than Joey's Dragon. But as he attacks, Joey activates his Grave Robber card, reviving the Time Machine to bring back his Red Eyes as it was on the previous turn. With his Red Eyes back at full strength, Joey attacks Keith's Slot Machine, destroying it and cleaning up the last of his life points.
As Keith wallows in bitterness, Pegasus is startled but pleased by the result. However Keith is not willing to give up yet and begins to argue that the match shouldn't count as Joey was duelling with Mai's card. Joey admits this, but asks how Keith could have known that and at this point, Pegasus reveals that Keith stole Joey's card. While the others argue that he should be disqualified, Pegasus informs them of Keith's cheating during the match, having the Seven-Completed cards hidden in his wristband.
As Pegasus's guards drag Keith away, Pegasus congratulates Joey on an admirable duel. But Keith breaks free from the guards and lunges at Pegasus, demanding the prize money. Unfazed, Pegasus calmly mocks Keith before pressing a hidden button that opens a trap door, dropping Keith outside of the island in the sea.
A ten-minute recess is called before the next duel will begin, and Joey and Yugi both contemplate their next duel against each other. In order to save their loved ones they must duel against each other, but will either be able to duel at their best against a friend who they previously duelled with together?
Episode 33 - Best Friends, Best of Duellists: Part 1
Having defeated their two opponents in two of their toughest matches ever, Joey and Yugi are about to go face to face in battle in order to seal the result of the Duel Monsters tournament. Both are duelling for close family; Joey for the money for his sister Serenity's operation to save her eyesight, and Yugi for the right to fight Pegasus and win back his Grandpa's soul. However with two best friends duelling for the title, it could be the most difficult match for both duellists.
As Yugi tries to back out, arguing that he can't face having to duel Joey, his friend and now arch-rival reminds him that they both promised to fight an honourable duel if the both reached the final round. Yugi agrees that Joey is right and prepares to duel better than ever.
But before the two begin, Pegasus decides to make a rousing speech, declaring the two duellists the best in the world and requesting that they duel at their very best, reminding them that he will know if they are not doing so (through the use of the Millennium Eye). Joey thanks Yugi for helping him get this far, but Yugi tells him that it was his own hard work that got him here.
As the two promise not to go easy on each other, Bakura and Pegasus both sense that the two will be duelling better than ever. However while Bakura is concerned for his two friends, Pegasus is merely amused by the twist of two friends having to fight as rivals in their biggest duel ever. With both friends ready to duel, a musical interlude kicks in to fill out the episode's spare time.
As the duel begins, Yugi plays his Celtic Guardian in attack mode and ends his turn. As his friends look on, they wonder if Joey will be able to defeat Yugi without the experience of truly intense duels. Bakura hopes wishfully that both friends will be able to get what they want, but Pegasus is more determined that he will be the only one getting what he wants, the souls of Yugi and Bakura and their respective Millennium Items.
Joey makes his move, playing Guiltia the Knight. Attacking Yugi's Guardian, Joey takes the lead, reducing Yugi's life points to 1550. But as Joey warns Yugi that he isn't pulling any punches in this match, Yugi is shocked that Joey has left his Knight unprotected on the field. Calling a time out, he reminds Joey that in duels of this magnitude every play must count to the overall strategy or he will get creamed easily by strong duellists.
In order to demonstrate what he means, Yugi plays Gaia, the Fierce Knight and attacks, destroying Joey's Guiltia and reducing his life points to 1550 as well. But as Joey plays the Armoured Lizard in defence mode, Yugi senses that Joey is beginning to spin together a strategy as does Pegasus, who uses the Millennium Eye to discover what Joey is planning.
As Yugi plays the Summon Skull, he attacks Joey's Lizard and destroys it. But rather than being surprised by this, Joey is pleased as he had hoped Yugi would play the Skull to attack. Playing the Flame Swordsman, Joey uses the Shield and Sword card to reverse the attack and defence points of each monster, making Yugi's Skull too weak to defend itself against the Swordsman. Attacking the Summon Skull, Joey's Swordsman destroys it and takes another chunk out of Yugi's life points, reducing them to 1150.
As Joey warns his friends that he has even stronger moves waiting in the wings, Yugi informs his friends that he too has strong moves to play. Playing the Curse of Dragon, Yugi uses the Polymerisation card to fuse his two monsters to form Gaia, the Dragon Champion. Attacking with his stronger fused monster, Yugi destroys Joey's Swordsman and reduces his life points to 750.
As their friends duel below, Bakura, Téa and Tristan wonder if Joey is able to take the strain of such an intense duel, having to think on his feet and at such a high standard. However Bakura realises that both Yugi and Joey are pushing the other to the limit, ensuring that no matter who wins the duel they will be at their best to fight Pegasus.
Drawing his next card, Joey picks up the Copycat card. Noticing that he has the Graverobber card in his hand, he begins to realise that he can use the two in a combo to help clinch the match. Playing the Red Eyes Black Dragon, Joey uses the Graverobber to steal Yugi's Summon Skull. As Joey prepares to make his next move, Yugi realises what he is planning and is shocked.
Playing the Copycat, Joey mimics Yugi's Polymerisation card and uses it to fuse the two monsters to form the Black Skull Dragon. As the Black Skull Dragon attacks, it destroys Yugi's Dragon Champion and reduces his life points to 550. With his awesome fused monster in play, Joey seems truly unstoppable.
But as Pegasus uses his Millennium Eye to find out what will happen as the duel progresses, the two friends taunt each other. As Joey warns Yugi that his Skull Dragon is about to win him the match, Yugi informs him that the duel is far from over. But does Yugi's deck really have the strength to defeat the Black Skull Dragon, especially when he is currently unprotected?
Episode 34 - Best Friends, Best of Duellists: Part 2
As their toughest duel continues, Yugi and Joey are both playing better than they ever have before. And with Joey having the most life points and also having the power of the Black Skull Dragon, it seems that he might just be unstoppable.
The intense duel is putting both friends to the test, stretching their boundaries both as duellists and friends. However while both Joey and Yugi are determined to win, Pegasus is certain that in the end he will be the only one to win when he takes both their souls, including those of their friends and the two Millennium Items the group holds (Yugi's Puzzle and Bakura's Ring).
As Yugi goes to make his next turn, Joey warns him that he knows every card in his deck and so the move will hardly be a surprise. True to form, Yugi plays the Dark Magician, but even it is not powerful enough to destroy Joey's Black Skull Dragon. However Yugi's turn is not finished yet and as he plays the Magical Hats, Joey realises that he has been caught out by a combo that Yugi has used in many previous duels.
As Joey's dragon attacks the first of the hats, it destroys the hat but finds nothing inside. However Joey is not finished yet and plays Garouzeis down in attack mode as well. As Joey finishes his turn, his friends wonder why he played Garouzeis in attack mode. If Yugi attacked it, Joey would be left with only 50 life points and even he would find it hard to win from that kind of disadvantage. However Bakura realises that attacking Garouzeis would draw out Yugi's Dark Magician, allowing Joey to counter with his Black Skull dragon and win the duel.
As Yugi begins his turn, he warns Joey that he won't fall for a bluff like that. Instead he plays a card under one of the other hats. As Joey contemplates what to do, he wonders what the other card was. In previous duels, Yugi has trapped one of the other hats, but Joey would expect that so it could be a bluff. As Joey confuses himself as to whether the card is a trap or not, he decides to attack anyway. Attacking with the Black Skull Dragon, he destroys a second hat but once again finds nothing.
At this point, Pegasus becomes aroused by the strong bonds of friendship that the two duellists have and begins to remember his own true love. The woman's name was Cecelia and she and Pegasus were deeply in love until tragedy struck and she passed away. Now Pegasus has become selfish and bitter, determined to fight for what he wants.
As focus returns to the battle, Joey attacks the Magical Hats again, but this time his Black Skull Dragon is caught by Yugi's Spell Binding Circle, reducing its attack points. Now with both monsters vulnerable to Yugi's Magician, Joey switches Garouzeis to defence mode in order to protect his life points.
With the Dark Magician and Black Skull Dragon at similar attack levels, a stalemate has begun between the two monsters. But with his experience of fighting Pegasus, Yugi is determined to win, doubting that Joey could face the power of the Millennium Eye were he to have to duel Pegasus. Playing the Book of Secret Arts, Yugi raises the power of his Dark Magician and then attacks Joey's Dragon. The attack rips through the Black Skull Dragon, destroying it, but Joey's life points remain in tact. Worried at the change of power, Joey does not realise that Yugi is hoping to utilise the Book of Secret Arts' other magical powers in the upcoming turns. Drawing the Baby Dragon, Joey plays it in attack mode and also lays another card face down.
Confident that the other card is the Time Wizard, Yugi attacks the Baby Dragon in order to destroy it before Joey can use the Time Roulette. But as the Dark Magician attacks, Joey activates the Kunai Whip Chain, trapping the Dark Magician. Shocked at his wrong prediction, Yugi can only watch as Joey makes what could be the final move of the game.
Drawing the Time Wizard, Joey plays it down, realising that it is the one card that could seal the match for either player. If it lands on a Time Machine, Joey's Baby Dragon will transform into the powerful Thousand Dragon, but if it lands on a Skull, Joey's life points will be eliminated. Not only is it the card that will seal the match, but it is also ironic that the card was given to Joey by Yugi as a sign of their friendship on the way to the Duellist Kingdom.
Spinning the Time Roulette, the two friends watch tensely as the arrow spins. But as it lands on a Time Machine, the time warp begins, spinning the field 1,000 years into the future. As Joey's Baby Dragon grows into the Thousand Dragon, Yugi's Dark Magician has withered to a weak old man. But as Joey orders the finishing attack, Yugi activates Makiou, the Magical Mist, and counters the Thousand Dragon's attack.
As Joey looks shocked that Yugi played the Magic card during his turn, Yugi explains that the Book of Secret Arts gives the Dark Magician mystical powers that take a thousand years to perfect, and that the Time Wizard's time warp gave him the time to transform into the powerful Dark Sage which allows Yugi to play magic cards on both players' turns.
Playing Monster Reborn, Yugi revives the Black Skull Dragon and prepares to attack. But even though he is upset that he will lose the match, Joey encourages Yugi to make the move, pleased that one of the two friends is going to win. As the Skull Dragon attacks, Joey's life points are wiped out and Yugi wins the match.
After the match ends, Yugi and Joey meet with their friends outside the arena. Joey offers Yugi his Glory of the King's Hand card so that Yugi can claim the prize money, but Yugi insists that Joey keeps the money for Serenity's operation, explaining that he was only in the tournament to save his Grandpa. As Joey tries to hold back the tears, he tells Yugi to take down Pegasus for the two of them. But will even Yugi be able to defeat an opponent as resourceful as Pegasus?
Episode 35 - Yugi V Pegasus - Match of the Millennium: Part 1
As Yugi prepares for the biggest duel he has ever fought, against Pegasus, he finds himself remembering how his Grandpa taught him everything he knows about Duel Monsters. Determined to win his final duel against Pegasus, he must not lose heart, as that will seal his defeat. As he heads to the arena, Yugi meets up with his friends who all wish him the best.
As Yugi enters the arena, Pegasus arrives as Croquet, the Tournament organiser, introduces him as the undefeated, undisputed ruler of the Duellist Kingdom. Yugi is not phased by the title, determined that with his wisdom and the strength of his cards he can win the duel.
Pegasus congratulates Yugi on having defeated such strong opponents, but Yugi is only concerned that Pegasus will keep up his end of the agreement, that if Yugi wins his Grandpa's soul will be returned to him. As Pegasus avoids the question, he begins to play mind games with Yugi, using the Millennium Eye to discover why Yugi wants to free the Kaiba Brothers as well. Discovering that Yugi made a promise to Mokuba, Pegasus mentions this to Yugi, taunting him with the fact that he can read his mind.
As Yugi prepares to duel, his friends wonder what Pegasus really wants from Yugi, believing that Pegasus always intended for Yugi to reach the final duel. Bakura and Tristan become concerned that Yugi may not be strong enough to defeat Pegasus, especially after what he did to Kaiba. As Téa and Joey head off to get a better view, Tristan tells Bakura that he is going to try and help Yugi by finding Mokuba and Kaiba, therefore reducing Pegasus's advantage. This revives Bakura's dark presence, which is intrigued by the idea.
Yugi is asked to show the Tournament verification card, and does so with no problem. Croquet announces that the card is blank because the winner can ask for anything from the loser. In this case, both players are fighting for the souls of others, but while Yugi fights to recover his friends' souls, Pegasus is duelling to win Yugi's. Meanwhile, Bakura meets up with Joey and Téa on the balcony, but when they ask where Tristan is, he claims not to know.
As the duel for the title of King of Games prepares to begin, each player must cut and shuffle the opponent's deck. But as Yugi shuffles Pegasus's deck, his opponent merely taps the top card and then passes it back. With both decks returned, the duel begins.
With his friend fighting the toughest duel ever, Tristan heads off in search of Mokuba. But as he searches through the castle, he begins to fear his search will be hopeless until he spots a guard coming. Hiding behind a suit of armour, Tristan follows the guard and finds a secret staircase hidden down a dead end.
Yugi begins by playing a monster card, and one other card, both face down. As Pegasus's turn begins, he announces that Yugi played a Beaver Warrior before playing two cards himself, Red Archery Girl in defence and one card face down. Yugi wonders whether Pegasus is leading him into attacking, but decides to take the risk anyway.
At this point, Pegasus uses his Millennium Eye to discover that Yugi is planning to use the Beaver Warrior with his Horn of the Unicorn in a combo move. As Yugi decides to dismiss the face down card, he reveals his two cards and attacks. But as he does, Pegasus's trap card, Tears of a Mermaid, is activated, cancelling the magic card. Switching his Red Archery Girl to attack mode, Pegasus destroys the Beaver Warrior, reducing Yugi's life points to 1800.
As Yugi begins to realise that Pegasus predicted the move, his friends wonder how Pegasus knew to counter the attack, and also wonder where Tristan has gone. Pegasus announces that Yugi is beginning to realise the magnitude of the duel they are playing, but it is too late to pull out now, even though Pegasus has an unstoppable advantage.
In order to relieve his friends' confusion, Bakura explains to Téa and Joey that the Millennium Eye has the power to see into anyone's mind and read their thoughts. The pair are shocked, both at the power of the Eye and at the fact that Bakura knew this. The three begin to doubt whether Yugi has any chance of winning the duel.
Meanwhile, Tristan has managed to find Mokuba, trapped in a cell at the bottom of the stairs. Knocking out the guard, he steals the keys and unlocks Mokuba's cell, but triggers a silent alarm that warns the other guards.
Back at the duelling arena, Yugi plays one monster in defence mode and ends his turn. Croquet, however, has received a phone call warning him of the security breach, but is unable to notify Pegasus without disturbing the match. As the organiser continues his conversation, Bakura uses the Millennium Ring to listen in on the call, learning that all exits to the castle have been locked.
As Tristan tries to escape with the soulless Mokuba, he finds the two of them trapped in a passageway with guards advancing from both sides. The duel is still continuing, however, as Pegasus plays Ryouran in defence mode, switching his Red Archery Girl to defence mode as well.
Preparing to make his move, Yugi seems to be growing more confident, so Pegasus decides to play another mind game. Reading the cards in his hand and then the one that he draws, Pegasus announces to all that Yugi has drawn the Summon Skull, commenting that it will go well with the Celtic Guardian, Magical Hats, Spell Binding Circle and Horn Imp.
Successfully psyching Yugi out once more, Pegasus begins to make his opponent doubt whether there is any way to win against the power of his Millennium Item, especially when Yugi's has not been fully unlocked yet.
Episode 36 - Yugi V Pegasus - Match of the Millennium: Part 2
As the duel between Yugi and Pegasus continues, the Creator of Duel Monsters has a strong advantage. Not only does Pegasus have two monsters to Yugi's one, but he has also reduced Yugi's life points to 1800. However neither duellist knows what is happening elsewhere in the castle.
The security guards have patched through to Croquet to inform him that Tristan has stolen Mokuba's body. Bakura, using the power of his Millennium Ring, listens into the conversation and decides to head off and help Tristan escape. As he goes to leave, Joey stops him, asking where he is going. Bakura tells Joey and Téa that he is going to find Tristan, and they agree that their friend has been gone for a long time.
Back on the duelling field, Pegasus is confident as to knowing Yugi's next move, playing the Spell Binding Circle and the Summon Skull. As Yugi makes the play, Pegasus is quietly pleased that his Millennium Eye has sighted all vulnerabilities in Yugi's deck and strategy.
Switching Ryouran to attack mode, Pegasus attacks the Summon Skull, activating Yugi's Trap card. But as Yugi prepares to return the attack, Pegasus activates his trap Displacement card, shifting the Spell Binding Circle onto Yugi's Skull. Taunting Yugi that he knew the move, he attacks the Summon Skull, destroying it, and reduces Yugi's life points to 1400.
Back in the castle, Bakura is using the Millennium Ring to find Bakura, like he did to find Pegasus's Castle previously. He finds Tristan trapped in a passageway, preparing to fight a pair of guards. The guards threaten Bakura, but he draws a Duel Monsters card. Activating the Chain Energy card, he traps the two guards and then Tristan, Bakura and Mokuba escape.
As the duel continues, Yugi is distressed that there seems to be no way to hide his moves from the Millennium Eye. Joey has also realised this, and wonders if there is any way for his friend to win, but Téa tells him that there must be a way and that they can't lose faith in Yugi. But with Pegasus knowing all of Yugi's cards and strategies and having built a perfect counter for each of them, it seems like it could be hopeless.
Just as things are looking bad enough for Yugi, Pegasus plays one of his favourite cards, Toonworld, the card that helped him to defeat Kaiba. As the Toonworld transforms his two monsters, Pegasus attacks Yugi's Giant Soldier of Stone with Manga Ryouran, destroying Yugi's defence monster. He then switches the Toon Mermaid to attack mode and ends his turn.
Surprised to see the Toonworld card again, Yugi is concerned that he does not know the weakness of the Toon monsters. In order to try and find out how to destroy them, he decides to play offensively. Playing the Celtic Guardian, Yugi sets up what should be a stalemate. But when the Celtic Guardian attacks, the Mermaid's clam blocks his sword while the Mermaid attacks, destroying the Guardian.
Pegasus mocks Yugi, explaining that brute force alone won't defeat the toons, puzzling Yugi further as to how he can defeat them. Pegasus plays two cards face down and then passes play back to Yugi. Deciding to give up on the offensive strategy, Yugi plays his Horn Imp in defence mode. But this activates Pegasus's Permanent Trap card, Gorgan's Eye, which turns the Imp into stone. If the Imp is destroyed after being turned to stone, half of its defence points will be taken from Yugi's life points.
Not content with trapping the Imp, Pegasus reveals his other card to be the Doppelganger. As the Doppelganger transforms into Yugi's defeated Summon Skull, it is swept up into Toonworld and transformed into the Toon Skull. As Pegasus's twisted sense of humour shows, he attacks Yugi with the Toon Skull, destroying the Horn Imp and reducing Yugi to 900 life points.
As Yugi draws his next card, Pegasus reveals that it is the Dark Magician, and announces that he is looking forward to crushing it most of all. Meanwhile, Tristan and Bakura are still being chased through the castle, and as they reach the top of a long staircase, they find themselves trapped. As Tristan prepares to give up, Bakura tells him that they haven't lost yet. Tristan asks what he means, and Bakura draws a deck of cards, preparing to recruit some help from the Shadow Realm.
With Yugi struggling to find a way to defeat Pegasus's Millennium Eye, and Bakura's Millennium Ring preparing to call upon the powers of the Shadow Realm, it seems that a colossal battle of the Millennium Items could be about to begin. But who, if anyone, will emerge victorious?
Episode 37 - Yugi V Pegasus - Match of the Millennium: Part 3
With Pegasus shutting Yugi down, no matter what moves he makes, it seems that there is no way to defeat Pegasus while he has the power of both his Millennium Eye and the Toonworld. Even so, Yugi is not willing to give up just yet, and plays the Dark Magician down, inside the Magical Hats. Certain that even Pegasus cannot learn where his Magician is, Yugi is confidant that he has successfully stalled for a couple of turns.
Pegasus, however, is not so sure. He warns Yugi that he can even find out the location of his Dark Magician by probing deep enough into Yugi's mind. As Yugi tries to resist Pegasus's Millennium Eye, Téa reminds him that he too has magic that can help him. Yugi remembers what his Grandpa told him about the Millennium Puzzle, and decides that maybe this is the time to put to work its full powers.
Contacting the spirit within, Yugi explains that in order to win, the two minds must become separated from each other. While the spirit is unsure of this, Yugi explains that if they can switch minds during the duel, Pegasus won't be able to read their cards on the field, because the other mind won't know them. Although it is a risky strategy, both agree that it is their only chance of winning.
As Pegasus commands the Toon Summon Skull to attack the hat on the far left, he is confident that the attack will wipe out the Dark Magician. But as the smoke clears, Pegasus is shocked to learn that Yugi's life points are still intact. As Pegasus wonders how Yugi could have deceived him, the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, Yami Yugi, explains that Pegasus could not read the location of the Dark Magician, because he didn't know it.
As Pegasus boils over with fury, Yugi Moto returns and plays one card face down. But as Pegasus goes to read what card it is, the two minds switch, and Pegasus is left with Yami Yugi's mind, one that does not know the card either. At this point, the spirit puts Pegasus out of his misery and explains what the two are doing. Pegasus is shocked that the two are playing a Mind Shuffle, but warns Yugi that he still has the gaming skill to win, even without the Millennium Eye.
Meanwhile elsewhere in the castle, Tristan, Bakura and Mokuba are trapped in a staircase. But as Tristan prepares to surrender, Bakura tells him not to be so foolish. As the Millennium Ring once again takes full control of Bakura, the evil Bakura uses it to summon a real Man-Eater Bug from the Shadow Realm. As the monster attacks the guards, Bakura summons the Morphing Jar, banishing the guards to the graveyard.
As Pegasus makes his next move, he gets the Toon Summon Skull to attack a second of the Magical Hats. The Hat once again comes up empty, and as Yami Yugi's turn begins, the two Mind Shuffle to allow Yugi Moto to take the next move. Drawing the Living Arrow card, Yugi plays it face down before switching minds once more.
As both players on the arena wonder what the two face down cards are, Pegasus plays the Magic Neutralising Force to wipe away the Magical Hats, revealing Yugi's Dark Magician. As the Toon Summon Skull attacks, Yugi Moto returns to counter the attack with his first face down card. Revealing the Living Arrow, he fuses it with Pegasus's Neutralising Force and fires it at the Toonworld.
As Pegasus's Toonworld is destroyed, the toons return to their original forms, but the attack of the Toon Skull is still coming. However Yugi counters this as well using his Mirror Force. Sending back the Toon Skull's attack, Yugi destroys all three of Pegasus's toons, reducing his life points to 600.
Back in the castle, the evil Bakura reveals his true motives for coming to find Tristan. After Bakura betrayed the spirit of the Millennium Ring during the duel it had with Yami Yugi (Evil Spirit of the Ring), the spirit wants a new host body that won't betray it. As Mokuba's body has no soul, the spirit wants to use it as his new host, but will Tristan be willing to give up Mokuba to the Millennium Ring?
On the arena, Yugi is pleased to finally be in the lead, but Pegasus is not willing to give up just yet. He congratulates Yugi on having managed to progress so far, from unknown rookie to contender for the World Championship. But Pegasus warns Yugi that he has not given up yet, and that the power of Yugi's Millennium Puzzle is what he was wanting when he began the tournament. And now that Yugi has unlocked more of its powers, Pegasus will be more than happy to take it from him as the two are transported into the Shadow Realm to finish the duel...
Episode 38 - Yugi V Pegasus - Match of the Millennium: Part 4
While Yugi's duel with Pegasus continues, Tristan must also face up to an enemy of the group, the evil soul of Bakura's Millennium Ring. As the evil Bakura demands that Tristan hand over Mokuba's body, Tristan begins to realise that the Millennium Ring is controlling Bakura. Tristan throws Mokuba at Bakura, and then knocks his possessed friend out before the Millennium Ring has a chance to work its power and take over Mokuba's body. Tristan then removes the Millennium Ring and throws it out of the castle window.
Back on the arena, Téa and Joey can only watch as Pegasus sucks both Yugi and himself into the Shadow Realm, where Pegasus is confident that he has the power to win the duel. As Tristan arrives with Bakura and Mokuba both unconscious, the arena has been totally engulfed in darkness. Téa and Joey ask him where he has been, but Tristan shuns off the question, as the answer would take too long to explain. The three leave the two bodies on the balcony and head downstairs to see if they can help Yugi in any way.
Inside the Shadow Realm, Yugi is finding the mental strain much greater than the last time he duelled Pegasus, especially having to maintain the Mind Shuffle while also summoning monsters. Yama Yugi takes over once more, as he is able to withstand the strain more easily, but Yugi still insists that they try to keep up the Mind Shuffle, as it is the only way they have earned a lead.
Pegasus is loving watching the strain of the two Yugis, and decides to throw a new monster into play; one designed especially for this duel. The Dark Eyes Illusionist has 0 attack points and 0 defence points, but it has other powers to help it out instead. Although certain that it is a dangerous card, Yami Yugi plays down the Curse of Dragons. He then Mind Shuffles back to Yugi Moto, but the young mind is obviously struggling with the strain.
Outside the arena, Yugi's friends can sense his pain. While none of them truly understand why, it seems that they have grown some kind of spiritual link as their friendship has grown. As their friend continues to battle Pegasus, he tells Yugi that he may as well give up the Mind Shuffle as it is obviously too much for him to handle. Yugi agrees reluctantly, and Yama Yugi returns.
As the Curse of Dragons attacks, the Dark Eyes Illusionist activates its hypnotic power to paralyse Yugi's monster. As Pegasus's turn begins, he uses the Black Illusion Ritual to sacrifice his Illusionist, but brings forth a stronger Spellcaster monster, Relinquished. Although this monster also has no attack or defence, it has a stronger hypnotic power, and with it Relinquished sucks Yugi's Curse of Dragons into it.
Playing the Dark Magician, Yami Yugi attacks, but Relinquished activates its Defence Shield, the Curse of Dragons. Pegasus explains that Relinquished can use any monster that it has absorbed to defend itself, but when the defensive shield monster is destroyed, it is Yugi's life points that are affected. True to his explanation, Yugi find his life points drop to 400. Not content with reducing Yugi's life points, Pegasus uses Relinquished to suck in the Dark Magician, using it like a Defence Shield to replace the destroyed Curse of Dragons.
Yugi insists that they have to continue the Mind Shuffle, but Yami Yugi is unsure. If Yugi's mind collapses under the strain of the duel, his soul will be shredded and lost forever. However Yugi remains persistent, so the two switch once more. As Yugi draws what could be his last card, Pegasus decides to try and fight Yugi from within, crushing his mind by over straining it.
As Yugi lays down the drawn card face down, he plays the Feral Imp into defence mode. But as he prepares to switch minds again, Pegasus attacks the Feral Imp with the Dark Magician, destroying the Imp and crushing Yugi's mind. As Yugi's body collapses, his friends outside the arena all sense the pain. Realising that something has happened, they become more determined to try to help Yugi.
Inside Yugi's mind, Yami Yugi is trying to revive his friend, but there is no hope left, as Yugi's soul has been shredded. Pegasus seems pleased at crushing the young mind, and taunts Yama Yugi to continue the duel alone. Meanwhile, unable to sense Yugi anymore, Téa tries to penetrate the vortex, but find herself re-emerging from it in the same place. As Tristan rushes into it, he finds himself passing through it and out the other side. It seems that Pegasus is determined that only he and Yugi will witness the Shadow Game unfolding.
Determined to avenge Yugi Moto's defeat, Yami Yugi returns, ready to show Pegasus no mercy. But he cannot change the fact that he failed to protect his keeper, and now may well fail to rescue Kaiba, Mokuba and Yugi's Grandpa as he alone is unable to block Pegasus's mind reading powers.
Drawing the Winged Dragon, Yugi realises that none of his cards can help him win, but maybe Yugi's face down card could help, if he only knew what it was. Playing the Winged Dragon in defence mode, Pegasus destroys it. Playing Gigen Bakudon, Pegasus explains that in two turns this new monster will self destruct, destroying Relinquished.
While this will destroy both Relinquished and the Dark Magician, Relinquished has no attack or defence points and so Pegasus's life points will remain untouched. It will however destroy Yugi's remaining life points. Not only that, but Gigen Bakudon cannot be destroyed by any attack, so there is no way to stop it exploding.
As Yami Yugi searches for some strategy that can help him, Pegasus assures him that he has no card that can help him win. With the power of the Mind Shuffle gone, and no way of stopping Pegasus's bomb, is there any way that Yami Yugi can win the duel, or was Yugi's sacrifice all for nothing?
Episode 39 - Yugi V Pegasus - Match of the Millennium: Part 5
As the duel in the Shadow Realm continues, Yugi's friends are beginning to worry that something bad has happened to him, as they are no longer able to sense him. Meanwhile, Yami Yugi is concerned that he will be unable to stop Pegasus's Bakudon Detonator before it explodes, destroying his life points.
As Yami Yugi begins to lose hope in winning the duel, Yugi's Grandpa appears, telling him that Yugi Moto is still with him in the heart of his friends, even though he cannot be reached. As the spirit's hopes are raised, Tristan, Téa and Joey are determined to reach out to their friend and help him, even if they cannot see him.
As Yugi draws his next card, Pegasus attempts to read what it is, but find himself blocked but the power of Yugi's friends. He may be unable to perform the Mind Shuffle any more, but with the strength of his friends he can still block the Eye from reading his mind.
Playing the Mystic Box, Yugi switches the Dark Magician and the Bakudon Detonator, freeing his Magician from within Relinquished. As Pegasus passes, unable to stop the detonator, Yugi uses Brain Control to take control of Relinquished for the turn. Pegasus is initially shocked, but then realises that the Detonator is about to explode, and rather than damaging him, it will hurt Yugi instead.
However Yami Yugi is not finished yet, and in an act of faith, he reveals the final card that Yugi Moto put onto the field, the Dark Magic Ritual. Sacrificing both the Dark magician and the Bakudon Detonator, the Ritual activates and summons onto the field the Magician of Black Chaos. With the most powerful mage in the game on his side, Yami Yugi is determined to avenge the sacrifice of his friend.
Pegasus is unfazed by this, and actually seems quite pleased, knowing that on his next turn he will be able to use Relinquished to assimilate the Chaos Mage. However to finish his turn, Yugi plays one card face down, and a face down monster in defence mode, demonstrating to Pegasus that he knows that he will try to assimilate his Mage.
Even though Yugi has guessed his plan, Pegasus is confident that he will be able to assimilate the Chaos Mage after he upgrades Relinquished. Using Polymerisation, he fuses Relinquished with the Thousand Eyes Idol to produce the Thousand Eyes Restrict, the most powerful Spellcaster in the game.
With a thousand eyes to lure in the Chaos Mage, Pegasus is confident that he will have no trouble assimilating it. As his monster casts its Thousand Eyes Spell, it paralyses both of Yugi's monsters. But as the Absorption Force begins to suck in Yugi's Mage, he reveals his other two cards, Kuribo and Multiply. As the two cards act together, the Kuribo multiplies until there are literally thousands on the field.
Paralysed by the Thousand Eyes Spell, the Kuribo are sucked in by the Restrict, exploding on contact and blinding Pegasus's most powerful monster. As the Magician of Black Chaos attacks, it destroys the Restrict, obliterating the last of Pegasus's life points.
Devastated, Pegasus is unable to believe that he has failed in his quest to claim Yugi's Millennium Puzzle and revive his wife. As the Shadow Realm begins to fade away, Yugi's friends are able to sense his presence again, and as the arena returns to full view, Yugi Moto is back, along with the spirit of his Puzzle.
Relieved that their quest is finally over, the four friends turn to where Pegasus should be, ready to claim the souls of their friends, but Pegasus is gone. As they prepare to track down Pegasus, they ask Bakura, who is just waking and seems to be back to normal, to look after Mokuba. But as the four head off, they do not realise the Bakura is still being controlled by the Millennium Ring, and that he is determined to take both Mokuba's body and Pegasus's Millennium Eye.
Episode 40 - Aftermath
With Pegasus defeated and vanished, Yugi is no closer to saving his Grandpa unless he and his friend can find out where his opponent has hidden himself. As Yugi, Téa, Joey and Tristan search the castle, Téa begins to remember a room at the top of a tower in the castle, but she thinks she may have been dreaming about it. As Yugi and Joey look at her blankly, Tristan also begins to remember what happened, including the battle between Pegasus and Bakura. As it is the only lead they have, the four friends decide to look there first.
In the tower, Pegasus is distraught at having been defeated, as it means he has failed in his attempts to revive his wife. However as a man of his word, he releases the souls of Kaiba, Mokuba and Yugi's Grandpa. As he looks up from the desk, he sees Bakura and begins to remember the events of the previous evening and how Bakura is the holder of another Millennium Item, the Millennium Ring.
Bakura offers Pegasus a chance to redeem himself, by facing him in a Shadow Game. However first, he decides to demonstrate to Pegasus the power of his Millennium Item. While the Millennium Eye allows Pegasus to read a person's mind, the Ring allows Bakura to read their soul. Using the Duel Monsters cards like Tarot cards, Bakura reads Pegasus's soul. The Happy Lover, played upside down, represents Pegasus's tragic experience with love, while the Mask of Darkness shows that Pegasus's current actions were merely part of a much greater plan. However the last card shows Pegasus's future; Doma, the Angel of Silence.
Bakura warns Pegasus that he will silence him, and as the two Millennium Items start a battle of minds, Pegasus is overpowered having been fatigued from duelling Yugi. With Pegasus defeated, Bakura claims his prize, the Millennium Eye. As Pegasus screams out in pain, Yugi and the others hear him and rush to the tower as fast as they can. As they reach the tower, they find Pegasus being carried out by his guards, weak and obviously injured. As the group climbs the tower, Yugi worries that with Pegasus injured he will not be able to free his Grandpa's soul. As they reach the top of the tower, they notice the picture of Pegasus's wife, Cecelia. As Joey, Yugi and Tristan wonder who she could be, Téa begins to read Pegasus's journal and learns of why Pegasus has been doing what he has:
"When Pegasus and Cecelia first met they were only children, but quickly fell in love with each other and became inseparable. The joys of love inspired Pegasus to take up painting and soon the two prepared to marry. But no sooner had they been joined together than Cecelia was struck with illness and passed away. Ever since that day, Pegasus became bitter and unable to love, searching for a way to revive his true love.
Pegasus's search led him to Egypt where he met up with a mysterious man who seemed to know about his quest to revive his wife. Pegasus followed the man to an ancient Egyptian crypt where the man explained that Pegasus would have to be tested by the Millennium Eye to see if he was the worthy possessor of it.
The Eye tested Pegasus and it was revealed that he was the true heir to the Millennium Eye, and its powers allowed him to see Cecelia again, but he knew she was not really there. It was at this time that he realised that if he could gather all of the Millennium Items and combine them with Kaibacorp's virtual technology, he would be able to revive his wife and be happy again."
As Téa finishes reading from the journal, Yugi notices the blank soul cards, and realises that Pegasus must have released them back into their bodies. As Téa, Joey and Tristan head off to find out if Mokuba is all right, Yugi lags behind deep in thought. Realising he has been left behind, Yugi heads off down the stairs, but is stopped by the mysterious figure who Pegasus's journal spoke of. As Yugi backs away from the man, uncertain of what he wants, the man explains that there has been a disturbance of fate since the Millennium Eye was taken, and that he must search to find the one who stole it.
As Yugi has one of the Millennium Items, it is possible that he has craved others and therefore stole the Eye. In order to find out, the man uses the Millennium Key to unlock Yugi's mind in the search for the answers. Inside the mind, he finds two chambers. One is filled with innocence and purity, but the other is dark and mysterious.
Entering this dark mind, the man is confronted by Yami Yugi's spirit, who questions why he is here. The man explains that the items are once again being collected by one who wishes to unleash their dark powers, and that he must seek out and punish the thief. Yami Yugi grants passage through his mind, but the man encounters many mental defences in his quest.
As he finally finds the door he is looking for, the floor beneath him begins to crumble. But as the man prepares to fall, he is rescued by Yugi Moto, who is also searching for answers. As the door opens, the chamber beyond is filled with ancient stone tablets with carvings of Duel Monsters creatures on them. The man explains to Yugi the history of the Shadow Games (intro to The Heart of the Cards), but as he finishes his explanation, the Dark Magician comes to life from the stone.
As the man prepares to use his Millennium Key to unleash the spirit of the Blue Eyes White Dragon's tablet, Yugi appeals to the Dark Magician, explaining that they are really friends. As the Magician stops in his tracks, the man is astounded that Yugi has been able to tame the monster that only listened to the pharaoh. He realises that Yugi is the Chosen One and that the prophecy is finally coming to pass.
As the two minds return to the real world, the man apologises for Yugi for the intrusion. He explains to Yugi that he is the Chosen One who is fated to unlock all of the magic and save the world from the chaos that threatens to return. He warns Yugi that the thief of the Millennium Eye will want all of the Items and will surely come after Yugi's Millennium Puzzle. As the man prepares to leave, Yugi calls out to ask him his name. As the man fades back into the darkness, he tells Yugi his name... Shadi.
